My husband and I bought his daughter and bike last year. We tried many times to teach her how to ride. She just can't seem to learn. So we had to put training wheels on it. She can't ride where her friend can see her because she says she feels stupid with training wheels. Any suggestions to give her some confidence? I feel bad for her but I'm not sure what to do she don't even want to try it without the training wheels.

I've taught my 8 year old step grand daughter and a 9 year old friend how to ride a bike in day. Stand on the left side of them. Hold the left side handle bars with your left hand and and the seat with your right hand. Bring up the right pedal at the top, and the left pedal on the bottom. When they start up, tell them to push down on the right pedal to give them a start. Go a few yards with them while they pedal and tell them "keep pedaling, keep pedaling". Tell them to stop by teaching them push the pedal backwards and to put both feet on the ground when ever they stop to hold themselves and the bike up. Go another few yards, stop. and repeat so that they know how to start the bike by stepping down on the right pedal on a high position and to stop, by putting both feet on the ground. You have to do this serval times. DO NOT let go of the handle bars or the seat, it will frighten them and they won't want to do it any more. After they know how to start and stop...... you can feel them going faster than you, let go and tell them to "keep pedaling" and run along side of them, saying "I'm here, keep pedaling" You'll be out of breath, but you'll feel great when your see them going by you on their bike. Good luck and hope this helps.

My advice is to tease her about the training wheels. If she wants to use training wheels...tell her those are for babies. Which is true and its great motivation. Plus, she would much rather hear it from you than her friends....trust me!

Also riding a bike is best taught by ones self. Let her do it herself. Trust me it works...she will fall down alot, but no pain no gain. Its just part of being a kid.

Give her time to learn. I learned when I was about 8, and I didn't have training wheels. It just takes time (about 2 months for me) and dedication.
