A female, once sexually mature, will go into heat (also known as estrus). Cats are seasonally polyestrous which means they will go into heat multiple times a season until they mate. Season usually starts a few months after winter solstice and usually ends in September or October. Indoor cats who are only exposed to artificial lighting may stay in season year round! Estrus itself will last 4 - 10 days and will cycle (about every 2 to 3 weeks) until the female mates, is spayed, or goes out of season. During this time the female will become fairly agitated: thrashing about, rubbing on floors and furniture, spraying, rolling about restlessly, lifting her tail to attract a mate, and crying or meowing loudly. Males in response to a female's heat will also have similarly extreme personality changes. In search of this willing mate he will do whatever he can to wander outside, he will also spray incessantly, mark his territory, and meow loudly. Many males also get fairly aggressive during this period.

It dosent mean horny. And geting them spayed dosen't stop them from coming into heat either, it just lowers the posibilityu of them reproducing again. 99.9% of the time the cat will never have kittens again. When the cat is in heat, which is normally 1-2 times a year (first when 6 month, then 12 month, then 18...) in steps of about 6 month. You can tell their in heat when under their tail swells up and goes red, and when the cat is in heat, it is the time that it is possible to mate and have kittens successfully, (although mating doesn't always work.) It normally lasts 1-3 weeks and then, after that thje cat will be free of animals sniffing it's but!

Basically it's ready to mate. My grandma had a cat in heat and she just ignored all the people and we kept catching her with these giant black cats that were harassing her and humping her every 5 min. Obviously they will have a litter soon..

Female cats go in to what is called heat every few weeks if not spayed. She is then ready to have kittens and can go into heat even when she is nursing her other kittens. It is a horrible time for both cat and owners.http://www.raskys.com/animals/cats.html

It means that it is desiring to reproduce. A cat can force itself into heat. It will cry rub on things etc until its cycle is complete. It is similar to having its menstral cycle at the peak when it can become impregnated.

this is the female--she comes on heat, and bleeds and it is time for her to mate,as do mostly all animals, including us,--exept we have somehow steered away from the bleeding being the time. The bleeding gives off the scent, and the scent attracts the males.MY dog could smell a female for miles, but not only that,--he could smell if a woman was on heat(periods)even though women of the modern age wear pads and spray deodorants.
