You may have injuried your back without knowing that you did. However if you have bad back & spinal cord pain I would make an appt. to see your doc as soon as you can. The spinal cord is major part of your body and you wouldn't want an injury to your spinal cord or back to go untreated if it is something major. You might just have a sore muscle, but as I say, better safe then sorry.
There are several reasons for the pain, but you didn't list what type of pain or where on your back or spinal cord the pain is.
Below is a hotline number for spinal cord injuries.
National Spinal Cord Injury Hotline
BILINGUAL
Information, referral and peer support for spinal cord injured persons and their families.
CALL: 1-800-962-9629 (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm) (EST); (24 hr for new injuries)

why kind of pain? does activity bring on the pain or does it happen even when you are still??
I would need more info to take an educated guess at what the cause is, but some simple causes would be kidney infection or stones (which cause pain in the back), pulled or strained muscle in the back, a slipped or compressed disk (the piece of cartilage between the bones of your spine)....your best bet is to talk to your doctor to rule out something serious.

what part, exactly on your back hurts? it could be a postural or muscular problem too.
when does it hurt? during which activities or motions? does it hurt when you are sedentary?
if pain persists, see a doctor.

Some scoliosis is painful. Are you sure its your spine and not muscle pain. How is your posture? It could be a pinched nerve.
