Several reasons, some of which are too extensive to elaborate here. The history between the West and the Middle East goes back centuries, and it would take me days to explain all of that. We'll just say that both parties are at fault.
The shorter reasons are:
We invaded in the first place due to Hussein's aggression, his repressive regime, and the fear that he was developing chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons, which was a blatant violation of the peace treaty signed at the end of the Gulf War (1990).
Also, Hussein had refused to allow UN inspectors entry, to make sure he wasn't developing said weapons, which was also a blatant disregard for the treaty. The UN had passed I believe seventeen resolutions against Hussein.
The reason we are still there is because the political climate is very uneasy. If we were to bring all of our troops home, the government would not be strong enough to stop the insurgents from taking over, which would mean that we would then have a breeding ground for groups like al Qaeda.
When we first went in, we had to entirely dismantle the government, so that no one was left who was still loyal to Hussein. We've then had to assist in rebuilding the government from the ground up.
The good news is, if and when we're done, Iraq will be stable, and will probably be an ally. From what I hear, the Iraqi prime minister (elected by the people, of course) has great respect for President Bush. This will help us tremendously, strategically and economically speaking.
Having an ally in Iraq will give us a foothold into the rest of the Middle East, which will also help us.
Of course, such an event depends much on what WE do here at home. We need to support our soldiers, and realize that they are competent (with a few exceptions, they are only human after all), they will do what they were went to do. Our success depends on all of us. Will we let the military do their job? Or will we continue to complain? (Not that you're complaining, I speak of the rest of us.)
I hope this answers your question. If you would like to know more, I recommend you read the history of our involvement in the Middle East, which goes back at least two millenia. Get it from both sides. The truth is in between.

Most of the answers are coming from a bunch of uneducated liberals who don't know what the hell they are talking about. But I will try to answer. Initially, we were there looking for WMD's as we thought we had intelligence that linked Saddam Hussein's govt to having such things. We are still not sure as they may have moved them into Syria. Also...Saddam Hussein and his murderous sons et al. were doing business with known terrorists who were linked to the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers.
In addition, Saddam Hussein just needed to go. He was an insane, tyrannical, megalomaniac who butchered his people. So, just because we didnt find any WMD's, doesnt mean we didnt need to go in there. Believe it or not, alot of the people were grateful that we ousted him. The ones that are pissed off now are the Sunni's who had it good under Hussein(he was a sunni muslim and took acare of his own). We ruined a good thing for them.
As for oil....we aren't looking for oil there. There is oil there. We are helping them to restore their pipelines. The insurgents keep messing with it so the new govt dont get the benefits from it. And the US doesnt want anymore than what the new Iraqi isnt willing to trade with. But all the same, it will provide jobs for US contractors and such in the region.
There are also economic reasons for being there as well. Trade and business in the region is all good for both governments as it is with all other countries in the world.
And we do need a military foothold as well. Since Iran and Syria seem to be threatening, we need to be there in Iraq to provide a buffer should either country decide they want to move in and mess things up. Iraq needs time to heal from the mess that Saddam Hussein has made over there. It will take some time.
The USA isn't just going to go in there and make a mess and just leave it. We would look pretty shitty as a country on the international scene. They will help clean things up and get things back in order before we move on out. After all, if someone came into your house and trashed it, wouldn't you want thim to stay and help clean up? Yes you would!!!!
Hope I put things into perspective.

Foothold to attack Iran. Mentally ill perverts in Iran are going to destroy the world. I don't know why the Bush Administration doesn't say that. The democracy in Iraq is all a push to stop Iran, the biggest problem in the world right now.

To take over and build another Las Vegas. Corprate America would love to start setting up shop there. Who do you think is helping pay for this war. Wal-Mart & McDonalds are just a couple who are paying billions to the U.S. Gov. to own a piece of Iraq.

I thought once that america had good intention, but I was wrong for the last time .The us are so stupid, they could get all they want by talking and listnening to people but they are so ignorant and arrogant to do so .They want oil (we have to sell the oil any way so why make problems ), they want to stop iran and syria (when was the last time iran and syria attacked any one ).If only people can think of others as they think of themselves.....
