I know this guy who looks and acts very effeminate. I asked, "dude. are you gay." He said no and now gives me dirty looks every time I see him. Looking back, I don't really know why I asked. I wasn't trying to be an asshole, and I don't have anything against gay people.

First off, why would you want to know? If they are or not is their business. If they feel that the world should know, they will tell.
Some men are just feminine acting with no reasons, they are just that way.
I think you need to apologize to this gentleman and tell him that you really don't know why you asked, just slipped out. But you would rather him know that you were guessing it was a possibility and instead of talking behind his back you decided to just ask.
Most people with an explaination can and will forgive anything. It may be uncomfortable, but at least you will feel better and maybe he will too.

LoL!
Your question seems like a joke. No offence. I am still laughing thinking how that guy must have thought and the looks you explained. Hilarious!

On the other side, you already have the answer in your question itself i.e. No!

No one can be judged by their physical appearances. And it is wrong on anybody's part to assume certain things, and more wrong so if you go ahead and ask them such stinging questions. Certainly not right to ask.

Not sure why you felt a need to ask the fellow. Unless you were having a personal conversation in which the topic was relevant self-disclosing, I'd say it was quite inappropriate of you to have asked. Since he seems to be so offended, I'd say an apology is in order.

You asked because you wanted to know for sure. That is the only way to know what someone's sexual preference is. Ask, if you are that interested in knowing. He may have become offended because of his own negative feelings about being identified with gay people-not yours.

IF you barely know that person, you shouldn't be asking that. Cos it may give out wrong signals such as indicating you're gay and is interested in him.

Only ask such things if you already know that person for a period of time.

you weren't wrong but you offended him and called his masculinity into question. it's possible this is something he's caught flack over and you just rubbed salt into the wound (unintentionally) apologize and tell him you didn't mean it as an insult, take the high road then if he stays upset it's on him and not you.

hey, you just asked. and i reckon you meant no disrespect, as you said you don't have anything against gay people. there's absolutely nothing wrong with asking.

don't mind him mate, probably he is gay, but he's still confused or in denial.

Nope. Ask away. If he ws gay, he'd be proud of it, and if he wasnt, like he says, he'd be very offended. But life is made of risks, so go with your gut.
