they can be in if the keep it a secret. but seriously, come on. its not a big deal. gays should be allowed to serve openly. other countries do, and it didnt make there military worse than it was before gays could serve openly. i think it would be smart, we need the people to serve, and there are many gays who would serve if they could do so with out having to deny there sexuality

because there are big manly guys w/guys walking around. i'm guessing that all of them have real man complexes so that's why they can't have gay guys in the military. all straight males think all gay guys are in love with them.

When I joined the military back in the early 90's, they had just removed the "moral qualifications", basically that meant they couldn't ask you if you were gay. For the record, I am not gay and I don't really have any issues about working with gays.

Currently there is a very strong sexual harrassment awareness in the military. Guys can't be hitting on their female counterparts or make suggestive comments or any of that. If figure it could be the same for homosexuals in the military, you can be gay as long as you stay professional. The gays in my squadron are hardly "secret". Everyone knows. I am amazed at how many still get kicked out for being gay to this day, especially in career fields that are already undermanned.

It is a can of worms, though, if the military allows people to be openly gay. Can there be officially sanctioned "military gay organizations", as there are Pacific Islander and Hispanic clubs now? Will gay marriage be recognized? Will the government give your gay spouse free medical care and government housing? Maybe all of this will happen some day. Clinton had the chance to allow openly gay people into the military and he went half way with this "don't ask, don't tell" compromise. Maybe that is far enough for now.

As an active duty Marine infantryman, there are several reasons gays shouldn't be in the military. First of all, I am not a homophobes, or narrow minded. I have gay friends, and they are great people. Not unlike the reasons women aren't aloud to serve in combat arms units. They both tend to allow emotion get in the way of rational thought. I'm not trying to say anything bad, and it's not true about everyone (that would be stereotyping). When you see a close friend fall, you can't always run to pick them up. Mission always has priority over troop welfare (within reason). For example: If your friend is shot in the chest, but is still alive, what do you need to think about first........ It's not how to save him. You need to think about who shot him and how you can kill them. After all of the shooting slows down, then you can think about helping him. So if emotion gets in the way it ends up being allot like a turkey shoot (for the bad guys). So now your thinking I am against women in the military. Actually I am, but that is personal belief that has nothing to do with this question. Women are easier to sort out of combat arms units than gay men would be. A gay man may do the job perfectly until the sh!t hits the fan and emotion takes over. That's when people die that shouldn't have. This is one of the most important lessons that you can learn before entering a combat environment.

All these people advocating open gays in the military have probably never served in the military. You don't have a choice who you live with or eat wit or shower near. How would you feel if you were ordered live with an openly gay person. If you were a straight person and then someone said you MUST live with this gay person. You have no choice, no if ands or buts this is the person you live with in a room no bigger than a hotel room or worse an open squad bay. Who wants to worry about their roommate with unwanted sexual advances? So what are you gonna have separate living quarters for Gays? Just impractical. If you think I'm wrong you should try serving in the military.

Because I personally don't want to walk into the communal shower and see two guys humping on each other like rabid weasels, that's why. If you want to be gay, and engage in that kind of behavior, great; just don't do it in my Army. Gay men have the most predatory sexual habits of any group, and are really disgusting about it. I don't want to have to deal with some "chickenhawk" hassling people for blowjobs while I'm trying to accomplish my mission. Take that crap somewhere else, the Army doesn't need it, and we don't want it!

As someone who spent ten years in the Navy, I will tell you my beliefs. Often times when you are in the military, you shower together, sleep in the same rooms, and often have close contact. Now as a heterosexual woman, I would not feel comfortable in a shower with men or in a bunk-room sleeping with men next to me or undressing in front of men so if I am a female and I know this girl is gay, the question in my mind is this, is she looking at me with the same interest as a man? Worse yet, you put a manly man like my husband in a situation like that and I guarantee you, he is going to want the gay guy in the rack with the girls, not looking at his butt crack while he showers.

It's a matter of the country's cultural attitude. Others allow openly gays in cause their culture don't look down on it as much as the U.S. does. There's enough homophobes here that any gay would likely be harrased badly.

Would you want to share a shower with him?

Think of the outcry if we forced female soldiers to shower with male soldiers.

BTW - your opinion does not really matter. The only opinion that matters it that of people who are likely to enlist in the military. If they do not want to serve with gays - then think of the manpower hit we would take by changing this policy.

Ok listen their are such thing as gay guys the **** around with the straight and that really dosen't feel good at all. And for that reason not only are guys freaked out by gays but also feel it better that they don't know. Not to mention how much crap they would get from streight guys.

because the straight ppl need an easy out when they don't wanna serve nemore.... if homosexuality was accepted on the military, then the only other option is to pretend that you're insane.
