The purpose of a deposit, is to show that you are buying the dog. The seller may have turned down other buyers, because he/she assumed the dog was sold to you..However, if you contact them before they have a chance to cash the money, then they should not cash it, but send it back..If it was a personal check, put a stop payment on it.

If you agreed to buy the dog and gave a deposit as your intent to buy the dog, that means the person did not sell the dog to someone else who may have wanted it. If you do not wish to buy the dog, I think your deposit is nonrefundable unless you have something in writing, because your deposit prevented the person from selling the dog to someone else, because he was holding it for you. Usually a deposit on a dog is nonrefundable because the dog may now be 12 weeks old instead of 8 weeks old, and the person may have to run another ad and it may be harder to find someone to buy it.

WHAT TYPE OF AGREEMENT DO YOU HAVE WITH THIS INDIVIDUAL ? IF IT STATES ( IN WRITING ) THAT YOU MAY CANCEL FOR ANY REASON THEN THE DEPOSIT MUST BE RETURNED. UNFORTUNATELY , THE ONLY WAY TO FORCE THIS ISSUE IS THROUGH SMALL CLAIMS COURT.
