Wrong.
It is illegal to require you to swear on the bible. I don't know about where you live, but in my state (massachusetts)...and pretty much all the states nearby (so far as i know)...the bible isn't even offered by default, and "so help me god" isn't in the oath.
Some states (mostly in the southern united states, from what i'm told) will have you swear on the bible by default, and put "so help me god" in the oath.
However, you are well within your rights to decline to swear on the bible, and to omit using "god" in your oath. No need for gloves or any of that; you can just decline to use the bible entirely.
You can also use a different holy text, if you would like.

Only on television.
I have watched MANY hours of court testimony and I have never seen a bible used to swear in a witness.
They raise their right hand and swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
I'm not sure when the bible was taken out of the proceedings.

So if you don't have to do it then why do people still do that. I think that is a problem because it builds a seperation religiously as some are "swearing" and others are "not" and could affect religious jury, and stuff, don't you think?
yeah, that'd be funny bring some satanic bible LOL!

that has been determined to be a violation of the principle of the separation of church and state. no longer done. you just swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
If they catch you lying you are guilty of perjury and suffer the fines and jail they may impose.
God is left out of mans law. his court comes later at the pearly gates

i does not place my hand on the Bible, and that i'd say "on my honor" rather of "so help me God." in the event that they choose me to declare "so help me God" rather, i'd. As A. J. Ayer mentioned, "i won't utter falsehoods, yet I have no objection to creating meaningless statements." I argue with theists approximately God's life, sure. i do no longer think in any gods. there could be one, yet many arguments helping the assumption are outright improper or in simple terms unconvincing.

Nope, it is not a requirement. You may swear by something else, or not swear at all but promise that your testamony is truthful.
