I have been reading very strange comments on Polygamy that is permitted in Islam. I thought why not to say something about it. Its for the lady JEST21 also who speaks a lot against other religions without having any knowledge. I m confident coz she mentioned in one of my ques. that she read in some one’s post that………. My question is y don’t u read those posts also that supports Islam, if u r really interested 2 clear ur doubts n queries? But if u r not interested then stop giving dirty comments for others.any how i want only those who can give some serious answer. other plz stay away...
Lets come to the point:
Polygamy means a system of marriage whereby 1 person has more than 1 spouse. Polygamy can be of 2 types. 1 is polygyny where a man marries more than 1 woman & the other is polyandry, where a woman marries more than 1 man. In Islam, limited polygyny is permitted; whereas polyandry is completely prohibited. now lets come 2 my original question....

The Qur’an is the only religious book, on the face of this earth, that contains the phrase ‘marry only one’. There is no other religious book that instructs men to have only 1 wife. In none of the other religious scriptures, whether it be the Vedas, the Geeta, the Talmud or the Bible does one find a restriction on the number of wives. According to these scriptures one can marry as many as one wishes. It was only later, that the Hindu priests & the Christian Church restricted the number of wives to one.
Many Hindu religious personalities, according to their scriptures, had multiple wives. King Dashrat, the father of Rama, had more than one wife. Krishna had several wives.

In earlier times, Christian men were permitted as many wives as they wished, since the Bible puts no restriction on the number of wives. It was only a few centuries ago that the Church restricted the number of wives to one.
Polygyny is permitted in Judaism. According to Talmudic law, Abraham had three wives, and Solomon had hundreds of wives. The practice of polygyny continued till Rabbi Gershom ben Yehudah (955 C.E to 1030 C.E) issued an edict against it. The Jewish Sephardic communities living in Muslim countries continued the practice till as late as 1950, until an Act of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel extended the ban on marrying more than 1 wife.

As I mentioned earlier, Qur’an is the only religious book on the face of the earth that says ‘marry only one’. The context of this phrase is the following verse from Surah Nisa of the Glorious Qur’an:
"Marry women of your choice, two, or three, or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one." [Al-Qur’an 4:3]
Before the Qur’an was revealed, there was no upper limit for polygyny & many men had scores of wives, some even hundreds. Islam put an upper limit of 4 wives. Islam gives a man permission to marry 2, 3 or 4 women, only on the condition that he deals justly with them.
In the same chapter i.e. Surah Nisa verse 129 says:
"Ye are never able to be fair and just as between women...." [Al-Qur’an 4:129]
Therefore polygyny is not a rule but an exception.

By nature males & females r born in approximately the same ratio. A female child has more immunity than a male child. A female child can fight the germs and diseases better than the male child. For this reason, during the pediatric age itself there r more deaths among males as compared to the females.
During wars, there r more men killed as compared to women. More men die due to accidents & diseases than women. The average life span of females is more than that of males, & at any given time one finds more widows in the world than widowers.
In the USA, women outnumber men by 7.8 million. New York alone has one million more females as compared to the number of males, & of the male population of New York one-third are gays i.e sodomites. The U.S.A as a whole has more than twenty-five million gays. This means that these people do not wish to marry women. Great Britain has four million more females as compared to males. Germany has five million more females as compared to males.

I can say with full confidence Restricting each & every man 2 have only one wife is not practical
Even if every man got married to one woman, there would still be more than thirty million females in U.S.A who would not be able to get husbands (considering that America has twenty five million gays). There would be more than four million females in Great Britain, 5 million females in Germany and nine million females in Russia alone who would not be able to find a husband.
suppose your sister happens to be one of the unmarried women in USA. The only 2 options remaining for her r that she either marries a man who already has a wife or becomes public property. There is no other option. All those who are modest will opt for the first.

In Western society, it is common for a man to have mistresses and/or multiple extra-marital affairs, in which case, the woman leads a disgraceful, unprotected life. The same society, however, cannot accept a man having more than one wife, in which women retain their honourable, dignified position in society and lead a protected life..
There are several other reasons, why Islam has permitted limited polygyny, but it is mainly to protect the modesty of women.

Yes a man can have more then one woman. he doesn't have to request permission from his current wife. However a woman can stipulate that her husband not marry more then one.
The verse was revealed after the battle of Uhud where a lot of muslims died.
As to woman we can speculate that
1) the need never arises. (no wars)
2) how do you determine the father of the child
and maybe more.
Many christians "Speculate" that the prophet solomon .. david.. and others sinned against god. however, why didn't god explicity state that he punished them for it. He did so to Jonah, when he made a mistake by abandoning preaching to his people. I think if god in the bible didn't like polygamy he would have clearly stated it. As far as the hardships that christians point to.. as being punishment for polygamy.. can they find one prophet that didn't have hardship.

This is correct. I would like to make a correction that the source for Abraham's wives is not "Talmudic law" (and same for Solomon) but the Bible itself. There are several Biblical personalities who had more than one wife.
The above information about the ban of "Rabbeinu Gershom" is correct.
I will only mention though that nevertheless, the practice of polygamy was generally quite rare, especially among the Jews in Rabbi Gershom's time (if I recall correctly, he lived in Germany).
Also, from what I have heard, the only Sephardic communities that practiced polygamy were the Yemenites.

The Baha'i scriptures put a limit on the number of wives. Originally it was 2, but with strict stipulations.... that each is treated 100% fairly, financially as well as in the man's heart. The man has to love each equally, not just provide for his wives equally. The Baha'i scriptures were revealed in a Muslim society (Iran) back in the mid-1800s, so it had to be worded very carefully in order to reveal the real message, and at the same time, not angering the Muslim clergy any more than they already were.
Baha'u'llah (pbuh), the Founder-Prophet of the Baha'i Faith, put the initial limit to two wives, with 100% equal treatment. However, before his passing, he appointed his son, Abdu'l-Baha' ("servant of the Glory" in Arabic), to be the one to explain Baha'u'llah's writings, and to further promulgate the Baha'i Faith. After Baha'u'llah's passing, AB explained that Baha'u'llah's writings mean that men are entitled to no more than wife. A man cannot love two women equally, this is impossible. Don't believe me? Ask yourself this... do you love each of your friends equally? Or do you have a unique relationship with each one? To love two women equally is impossible. Therefore, the initial limit of two with the very strict stipulation of treating them 100% equally, both financially and in the man's heart, are the conditions upon which having 2 wives would not be possible. In the Baha'i Faith, there is only 1 wife for a man. At least 1 wife at a time, lol. Divorce is permitted for us, but there are rules for that too, I won't go into it now.
Just wanted to clarify that Islam is not the only religion that puts a limit on the number of wives a man can have. Our religion does too.

Wrong.
"Each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband." I Cor. 7:2. There are more, but I doubt you care about what the scriptures actually say when making up your own deluded version is much more convenient for your agenda. No Christian church in the entire history of the world has ever endorsed or condoned polygamy, and only comparatively recently did they recognize divorce.
Maybe you should actually read the Bible before making up false claims?
"In the USA, women outnumber men by 7.8 million." That is out of a population of 300 million. So that means for every 100 men, there are 103 women. Wow. What an astonishing and significant difference.
"The U.S.A as a whole has more than twenty-five million gays. This means that these people do not wish to marry women"
There are an approximately equal number of gay men as there are lesbians, so it balances out.
"In Western society, it is common for a man to have mistresses and/or multiple extra-marital affairs, in which case, the woman leads a disgraceful, unprotected life." You're muddling up your argument. What is it you are trying to prove, the scriptures or common practice? Men in Muslim countries take multiple mistresses, some of them are even gay (oh no!). Yep, many Muslim men are gay. The statistics don't show it, because in a primitive society where people are murdered because their sexual preference doesn't follow what a fanatical religious leader says, they conceal their sexuality and put on a mask of conformity. This is a well-documented phenomenon that has occurred throughout history, so don't feel like I'm singling Muslims out.
But you're right, this is so much worse than Muslim societies were women can be beaten, raped, and then exectued by their families to preserve "honor;" where women who commit extra-marital affairs are brutally murdered by a ravenous mob of barbarians with stones; where women have their gentials mutilated and destroyed to make sex as excruciatingly painful as possible and keep them oppressed by their tyrannical male overlords.
See, the fundamental flaw in your reasoning is that you assume it is the entire function and purpose of a woman's life to be a wife. You still are so brainwashed by Islamic misogyny that you can't even consider living a full and meaningful life that doesn't consist of you handing over every scrap of your dignity and privelege to a man. Women in the West learned long ago that there's more to life than spitting out babies and cooking food. It is to these pioneering Western women that you own that fancy education you have, your ability to vote, your ability to get a job and make a meaningful impact on society.
But do you care about any of that? No. You don't want responsibility, you don't want to make anything of yourself, you would gladly be dominated. Anything to take away that horrible burden of freedom. It's easier to be a servant, because then you have someone else to blame, someone else is responsible for you. The thought of taking responsibility for your own life, your own individual existence, is utterly terrifying to you.

this was only meant in the early history of man to populate the earth with Righteous people. a woman can only have so many children and these men had to father nations.
i see what your saying women may out number men but that doesn't explain why there are still so many men who cant get a woman. and also look how many men and women in this world who are gay.
a woman needs to be the only one in a relationship in order to feel loved and respected. excuse me for being blunt but most men can not satisfy one woman much less 3 or 4. look at the divorce rates and the reasons for divorce.

Umm yeah you have way to much time on your hands!! why do you care you obviously will only marry one man so why do you care what or whom anyone else Mary's All i have to say is that's what is wrong with the world today if everyone would just mind their own religion (business) the world would not be in so much turmoil........ No offense i just think that if people would go about their business and do and practice their won religions the world would be a much happier place but we have so many people that are judgmental and jump to get their mind at ease by asking and acting on their own feelings..... A lot of individuals, adding a few Muslims, query the good judgment of enabling Muslim guys to have multiple partner whilst denying the equal ‘correct’ to ladies. Let me first state emphatically, that the basis of an Islamic society is justice and fairness. Allah has created guys and ladies as same, however with special advantage and special duties. Men and ladies are special, physiologically and psychologically. Their roles and duties are special. Men and ladies are same in Islam, however now not same. Surah Nisa’ Chapter four verses 22 to 24 offers the record of ladies with who you cannot marry and it's extra mentions in Surah Nisa’ Chapter four verse 24 "Also (prohibited are) ladies already married" The following features enumerate the causes why polyandry is unlawful in Islam: one million. If a person has multiple spouse, the moms and dads of the youngsters born of such marriages can conveniently be recognized. The father as good as the mummy can conveniently be recognized. In case of a lady marrying multiple husband, handiest the mummy of the youngsters born of such marriages will likely be recognized and now not the daddy. Islam offers massive significance to the identity of each moms and dads, parents. Psychologists let us know that youngsters who have no idea their moms and dads, chiefly their father suffer extreme intellectual trauma and disturbances. Often they have got an unsatisfied formative years. It is thus that the youngsters of prostitutes should not have a healthful formative years. If a youngster born of such wedlock is admitted in university, and whilst the mummy is requested the identify of the daddy, she might have got to provide 2 or extra names! I am mindful that contemporary advances in technological know-how have made it viable for each the parents to be recognized with the aid of genetic trying out. Thus this factor which was once relevant for the beyond will not be relevant for the gift. two. Man is extra polygamous by means of nature as in comparison to a lady. three. Biologically, it's less complicated for a person to participate in his tasks as a husband regardless of having a number of other halves. A lady, in a equivalent role, having a number of husbands, won't discover it viable to participate in her tasks as a spouse. A lady undergoes a number of mental and behavioral alterations as a result of special stages of the menstrual cycle. four. A lady who has multiple husband may have a number of sexual companions while and has a prime threat of obtaining venereal or sexually transmitted sicknesses which may also be transmitted again to her husband although they all don't have any further-marital intercourse. This isn't the case in a person having multiple spouse, and none of them having further-marital intercourse. The above causes are those who it is easy to conveniently determine. There are customarily many extra causes why Allah, in His Infinite Wisdom, has prohibited polyandry.
