I have noticed that at athletic events (baseball, football, basketball), NASCAR events and so on that people and participants no longer pay attention during the National anthem and the flag raising. The right hand is not placed over their heart in respect. During Parades as the flag passes, the majority of people do not stand to show respect for our flag. This bothers me. Most of us have had family members (uncles, brothers, fathers, sons, daughters, grandfathers) who gave their life for this country. This disrespect has even carried over into the miltary and the wearing of the flag on their right shoulder. The flag is being worn backwards according to the published flag ettiquete because....now get this... the UN wanted them to!! What ever happened to the respect our flag used to receive?

What ignorant answers. The flag symbolizes your country, people. Learn what the meaning of the flag is before you just blow it off. For openers, the red stripes symbolize the blood of those who died for this nation. That in itself should make you show a little respect for it. The president is why? That flag has nothing to do with the man in the office of the president. NOTHING!!! What on earth are they teaching kids in school these days. Disgusting.

Prince Uranus, I hate to be the bearer of ill tidings, but Al Gore did NOT invent the internet. Good grief, don't you people read? As for global warming, YOU are partially responsible for that every time you drive your little Honda or whatever. I do wish you would all try reading something besides the National Inquirer.

The flag? Who cares?

I, for one, do not worship, or care about, a piece of cloth.

I like my nation. I like living here, and i like seeing the people of my nation prosper. It is delusional, however, to carry that mindset over to a reverence for a symbol of said nation. You love your nation? Great. But that doesn't mean you should treat the flag as sacred.

Showing respect for your country means helping your country and the people who live in it. Religiously waving a flag, putting your hand over your heart, and slapping a yellow ribbon magnet on your car are not only pointless, they verge on disrespect.

A true patriot doesn't need to scream her allegiance to everyone who will hear. A true patriot works hard at a useful profession, pays her taxes, votes every chance she gets, and puts effort into making sure she knows who she's voting for.

It's the same question why so many Americans do not know the whole lyrics to the national anthem, they do not know the history of flag.

Because it has lost its meaning. It is just a chore and a boring part of a fun event. Back in the old days it meant something to be free. And they knew what it was like to not have that luxury.

Although america is only free if you are rich
