Interesting question.

People from long ago have relied on spiritual leaders for advice starting with the first witch doctors.

As far as counseling, I would say that it may have sprouted from religion. However, instead on relying on invisible concepts, it is now a practice in common sense evaluation and application in the material world.

shamans probably... they actually had time to study people and notice psychological problems.

African shamans are expected to be the counselors.... because they can get people to admit to things that they wouldnt admit to otherwise. They can accuse someone of "witchcraft" to get the person to confess... but the people in small villages are generally forgiving and all is forgotten... in this case the shaman is the "diffuser of tension" and it works well for them

probably, to all the questions. although there were a few Greek guys before that who tried to figure out what people were thinking. Socrates comes to mind.
