hey teresa,
i realized that alot of the answers youve gotten so far, are pretty shitty (ex. the first one)
but basically, in Islam, God plays the same role as anyother God in Christianity and Judism. He is the all knowing, the all powerful, the almighty.
basically one of the main differences in christianity and islam is that we do not believe that Jesus is god.
if u want to know more or if im not clear, let me know =)
good luck <3

In Islam God is the Creator, his nature can be described as all seeing, all powerful but overwhelmingly all forgiving. In Islam God is the only supreme being, with no partners (family or otherwise), in fact it is considered a great sin to associate partners with him. This can be seen in the fact that Muslims consider Mohammed (PBUH), Jesus (PBUH) and all other prophets as just men to whom the message has been sent and prophets because they are entrusted (or compelled) to prophesize (spread) that message and not as divine beings. Muslims believe that God put them on Earth for two reasons, one as a direct result of Adam (PBUH) and Eve's disobedience and two because he wished them to see the right and wrong for themselves and for them to decide how to live their lives. God says " Ask forgiveness from me...because I will forgive every sin because I love my creations". Muslims believe that between every person & God there is a "direct line" of communication and that is why we do not believe in priests and the like.

In Islam according to Holy Quran and Sayings of Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him), God Has 99 different names pertaining to His different attributes. But most specifically God likes to be called "Rehman(one of the name among 99 different names)".God likes this name so much that there is a complete Surrah on this name and this surrah is called "Surrah Rehman"Rehman means "Some one who is full of mercy".Whenever some one bends infront of Him in deep repentance, He instantly forgives and showers His blessings.Hence the nature of God is "Rehman(Full of Mercy)" in Islam.
Hope this verse about God from Holy Quran will be able to give you an answer to your question.
"It is He who gives you life and causes you to die.It is He Who when He decides to do something needs only to say: "Be" and It is." (AlQuran 40:68)
God may bless you and guide your heart towards truth

In a nutshell. God created mankind to worship him. He created good and evil and gave people free will. He chose for people to follow good and they are those who are rewarded. Life is a test.
Quran says:
029.002
YUSUFALI: Do men think that they will be left alone on saying, "We believe", and that they will not be tested?
029.003
YUSUFALI: We did test those before them, and Allah will certainly know those who are true from those who are false.
Worshiping god includes everything from being nice to your neighbors to praying 5 times a day , every one of his commandments. Those who do more good than evil and are muslim get to go to heaven Those who have been bad go to hell.
No guaranteed salvation in islam. Hence judgement day.
God is all knowing and all seeing. I believe there is a hadeeth that says whatever you think of god physically, He is nothing like that. but don't quote me on that.
He neither begets nor begotten. Eternal. Alone.
He loves those that do good, kind, pious.. and doesn't love those that are obstinate, proud, transgressers,

Teresa, I'm glad you asked this. Usually I put my two cents in since I've read lots about Islam, but this time I'll let the Muslims answer. I just wanted to warn you, you're gonna get lots of ugly answers to that question. Pity the fools.

First I would like to start in the name of Allah. There is no god but Allah and Hazrat Muhammad P.B.U.H is his messenger.
Well Allah is one with no wife no sons.
He send us to worship him.
He never sleeps or get tired. He is always looking at us what we are doing.
He is not like us,he is invisible and do not consist of a body like us.
He is the only one who made us,universe and help us in our difficult times, when we ask help from him.
He send many messengers like Jesus for the welfare of mankind.
All were Muslims and believe in Allah. He send them to spread Islam, make people aware of the truth.

The true nature of god is beyond the comprehension of humans.
We do have a lot of people-made definitions though.

Allah is the Arabic term for God with a Capital "G" in the journey that your conversing some god with a decrease "g" then it has masculine and woman genders. so once you hear Arabs or Muslims in particular say Allah then you certainly comprehend there conversing approximately God with a Capital G!
