Did you chemically straighten it? If so, then the chemicals dried and weakened your hair. As it grows out, be sure to get it trimmed regularly to cut off the split ends. Use a good moisturizing, or "replenishing", conditioner and try not to heat style it (blow dry or use a curling or straightening iron) everyday.

Even the sun can damage your hair. Hair is dead. It is a matter of the oil from your scalp not reaching the ends. It dries up and breaks off. That's what hair does. Get a trim and quit worrying about it. All those shampoo commercials are fake. Nobody's hair is that nice.
