Oh, dang... I don't know. It could have something to do with the fact the religion... particularly the 'revealed' Abrahamic death cults of desert monotheism... simply cannot withstand the glaring light of reason, logic and critical thought. And THAT might have something to do with the fact that around 20 studies conducted over the past 80 years reveal a statisticall significant NEGATIVE correlation between intelligence and religiosity; in other words, the smarter someone is, the less likely they are to be religious.

If you think about it, those findings make a lot of sense. Intelligence tests mainly provide an indication of reasoning ability and problem solving ability... logic, reason and critical thought. These are the very qualities that see through religion, and recognize it for what it is. This was well understood by important figures in religious history. This is why the early church destroyed all the 'tainted' (non-canonical) writings, which were in conflict with dogma... Greek philosophy, medicine, mathematics, astronomy, engineering... all the good stuff. By this means, Christianity dragged humanity directly into the Dark Ages.

Just to illustrate the point, let's see what Martin Luther, the 'father' of protestantism, had to say about 'reason' and secular knowledge:

"Reason must be deluded, blinded, and destroyed. Faith must trample underfoot all reason, sense, and understanding, and whatever it sees must be put out of sight and ... know nothing but the word of God." ~ Martin Luther

"Reason is the greatest enemy that faith has; it never comes to the aid of spiritual things, but -- more frequently than not -- struggles against the divine Word, treating with contempt all that emanates from God." ~ Martin Luther

"There is on earth among all dangers no more dangerous thing than a richly endowed and adroit reason... Reason must be deluded, blinded, and destroyed." ~ Martin Luther

"Reason should be destroyed in all Christians." ~ Martin Luther

Finally... why should any of the following things make sense to you? They should not make sense to ANYBODY:

*  a universe in which all that exists are the earth and heaven
*  solid 'firmament' structure (the sky) separating the earth from heaven (terrarium earth)
*  talking snakes (with legs) and donkeys
*  shepherd staff turning into an asp
*  demons chased out of people and into pigs
*  friendly spirits
*  evil spirits
*  walking on water
*  multiplying loaves and fishes
*  food falling from the sky
*  conception by a ghost
*  people raising from the dead
*  the sun stopping in its tracks
*  parting seas
*  people being bodily sucked up into heaven (which, by the way, lies on the 'other side' of the sky)
*  world-wide flood that drowned the earth to a depth of 40 feet above the tallest mountain
*  creating people from dust bunnies and ribs
*  magical tree of knowledge
*  god speaking from a burning bush
*  ritual cannibalism, by eating god in the form of a cracker

First of all, I seriously doubt you have an iq of 144. If you said 100, I'd probably believe you. And if you are a grad student studying pschology, you would know an iq doesn't measure intelligence or lack thereof. Second, your ability to understand something doesn't denote it's veracity. Do you understand thermodynamics or quantum mechanics? No, you don't. Does that mean that they don't exist? Ofcourse not. So, just because you don't understand it, doesn't mean anything.

Here's some psychology for you. Maybe, you don't understand it because you don't want to, maybe you already have your mind made up and are blocking it., maybe you experienced a traumatic event as a child and that has shaped your world view. Maybe you think that if you don't believe in God, you can live a life without any moral consequences to your actions. Am I right? Yea, I am. And honours psychology? Isn't that in high school still? Yea, thought so.

Not sure, but I'm gonna guess it's because you have an IQ of 144.
In all actuality that has nothing to do with it. While the current leading IQ test is as accurate as we've been so far, it still gives you a total score based on all aspects of inteligence. The reason you can't grasp religion is likely because you're logical ad rational and most religions are based on emotion and blind faith. Not to mention your subject of choice is psychology. As far as rules and restrictions (sins) are concerned, psychology explains away any reason to comply.

God, you're so smart !!! And I'm a fool indeed... God and religion make sense to me , but if you're doing honours in psycology, then you're right I guess...

But, hmm, how can you explain a human's complex psycology ?? Sometimes I feel happy, sometimes sad, and sometimes I feel like a fool, so fool that I claim I'm doing honours in my job and I have an IQ of 145...

By the way, why do you need to ask this question to the fool people like us ?? You already know the answers, because you are so smart, right?

And, I'm a computer engineer and I have an IQ of !56 and I'm doing really good things (but not honours :)) ) in my job...

Because you're smart enough to question what most fools don't; the answers handed out to everyone. Most just follow blindly and believe what their told to believe (Cleric, Pastor, Rabbi, Pope). These "leaders" exist to steer and manipulate humans to believe what they want so there "market shares" in the world don't go down. It's about power and greed.

Come on, a Catholic can kill 40 people and say 20 Hail Mary's and is good to go again? I'd pay for that if it was true!

It's easier to go through life believing that "someone" is watching out for little ole you, then to go through life looking out toward the cold empty universe. It's about the ID, EGO and Super Ego. At least that's what my 152 IQ tells me.

Look at the people who don't even bother to create their own avatars, just blindly click one...We tend to follow a few. The smart (few) have always led the less then smart, lazy, weak (many).

Question everything you read, hear, feel and see, even if it's not popular. Even love is just a internal chemical change, that's why when people cannot find answers their body finds the nearest parental figure to latch on to; God, Allah, Buddha, etc.

Don't be another cow.

Precisely because you "...have an IQ of 144 and i'm doing honours in psychology..." Sorry, but that IS the bottom line. Brighten up though, if you were doing an honours degree in, say, history or sociology or physics you would doubtlessly be similarly "plagued" (a subjective term, does it apply? If so, why?).

IQ means nothing. It's a faulty measurement that was designed merely to determine the cause of disruptive behaviour in the classroom.

Anyway, the reason why God and religion don't make sense to you is because they don't make sense, full stop. To anyone who chooses to look into the matter with an open mind.

I majored in Psych too! God is not something that's supposed to make sense. The belief in God is just something that's based on belief, on blind trust. There's no way you can have proof of god and there's no way you could find out if everything written in the bible is true. It's just something to keep you warm at night, and in all honesty, it makes no sense. Parting a sea, destroying the walls of a city, walking on water - they're supernatural. God is supernatural. Religion on the other hand, it's all different alterations of the same story.

Because you are a intelligent enough to realize that religion truly does, "make no sense". You haven't mentioned a previous religious experience, so I am guessing you haven't been conditioned (brainwashed) to believe religious ideas. This is a key factor in enabling a person to claim the irrational as rational.

When an intelligent person examines religion without pre-conditioning, many times they come to the same conclusion you did.
