Both of my cats have this gross, black flakey stuff on their chins....what is it? Does it have anything to do with fleas? (they are both indoor, so i don't see how they could have fleas). It doesn't seem to bother them, but should I have a vet examine them anyway? Has anyone else had this happen to their cat?
They've had it for about a week.

O, god, it is fleas. I'm taking them to a vet right away, none of those flea treatments have ever worked for them. It's just really wierd, I've had cats all my life, and I've never had a problem this kind of problem.

This is either feline acne or a flea allergy or both.
In summer fleas hop onto clothes and shoes and are tracked into the house. For an allergic cat one bite from one flea can cause the reaction you describe.
Feline acne is just like human acne but harder to treat because of all the fur. There are cat shampoos that have benzoyl peroxide, your vet will have them.
I would treat for fleas first. Advantage and Frontline are great. No flea collars please they are pointless.
If it clears up, great, not acne. If not go to a vet.
Good Luck

It's either flea dirt (which is really dried blood from the flea bites and flea waste) or it's an allergy. My guess is it's flea dirt because they both got the same symptoms at the same time. Two cats having the same allergy breakout at the same time is unlikely, especially if the two cats aren't related.

If both cats have the same symptoms, only take one of them to the vet. There's no point in spending the extra money when you already know they both have the same thing. If it is just flea dirt, the vet will apply some flea medicine (like Advantage or Frontline) to the cat you bring with you and then send you home with another dose for the cat you left at home.

It doesn't sound like anything serious. When two cats get the same symptoms like that, it's usually something real simple like fleas. And yes, indoor cats also get fleas. They get them from other people who have fleas on their clothes. The medicine will kill the fleas within hours and keep killing them for up to a month so any fleas around the house will eventually die as well. As long as you apply it once a month in the summer and once every 2-4 months (depending on the climate you live in) the rest of the year and keep them indoors, you should never have this problem again.

Be a humane and responsible cat owner. TAKE THEM TO A VET!!!

P>S> Educate yourself about fleas. You and any one entering the house can and will bring in fleas on your clothing. Fleas are very attracted to white socks believe it or not. If you walk through grass, they easily jump onto your socks and shoes and other clothing and you carry them right into the house and never be aware of this. Open a door, fleas enter. It's that simple.

If it looks like pepper than its flea poop.if it is you should start seeing salt looking things on your furniture and bedding that's flea eggs. if this is so vacuum everything, get Advantage for your cats, then vacuum every day for 2 weeks(empty bag every time).Wash all bedding yours and animals. If it looks like the skin is flaking in larger chunks go see vet.
