4 am is the time they are out the most, so it very well could be coyotes.. without a motion detector, or a surveillance camera, they will be hard to see...Sneaky and clever they are!
However, if you have chickens, and none are missing, it is likely that they haven't been there.

I think it is more likely to be foxes or raccoons than a coyote, unless there is dog food left outside, then it could be all three. It could also be your neighborhood cat making the rounds. A good idea would be to put a motion sensor light outside and aim it as low to the ground as you can, then the light will come when animals enter your yard. After a couple of nights of having the lights come on when they get near your yard, they should begin to avoid your area and you should be able to sleep the night through.

it could be any number of things they are barking at: raccoons, skunks, oppossums, cats, coyotes, etc. Motion sensor lights may be a good investment. Since your dog is a large breed...even if it is coyotes I would not worry too much about it. They are not gonna mess with a large dog. If you had tiny dogs and thought coyotes were out there then I would not let them out after dark unattended.

Please say that your dog is in a secure fence....coyotes travel very quietly, and when they are howling/shrieking it is when they are killing something. Our dogs (for some reason) remain quiet and curled up when they sense they are close. After they are in another area the dogs bark!
We live in the country with 4 rat terriers and 1 rottweiler and I have seen their reactions when we have heard the coyotes. We have had the bad experience of losing one of our dogs to coyotes and it is terrible, and we felt so helpless.

The coyotes will howl when they are close by. It is kind of like a wolf howl. If you do not hear them, it is probably not a coyote. We have a lot of them in our area.
