I compared a Sony 40" vs Vizio 42" with the same specs (contrast, brightness...) but Sony looks much brighter. Should I be comparing other specs?

Some of them are designed to be brighter. Some are tweaked in the store to be brighter. Some are just brighter naturally, and are usually better. Even on the old mammoth TV's you can see a noticeable difference in brightness from brand to brand.

As long as you go with a name brand that has a warranty, go with the one that looks the best to you.

You've just stumbled upon the problem with reading specs.

Each manufacturer has their own way of coming up with them. There is a lot of formulas involved, where pieces here and there can be manipulated to give desirable results. So some companies, particularly those with more at stake such as smaller companies new to the market, will have specs that aren't up to the same standards as say Sony or Toshiba.

Unfortunately, there's no "spec police" out there to regulate it. If you see a price that's too good to believe, it probably is. You get what you pay for when it comes to any kind of monitor or TV.

THE BRIGHTNESS OF LCD TVS DEPENDS ON THE BACK LIGHT. SO CHECK THE SPECIFICATION OF THE BACK LIGHT.
