Apparently many people have forgotten that there has always been some kind of belief in some kind of deity since the beginning of mankind.

I don't know. While I'm not religious, I wouldn't make fun of people for believing in God. Some people just like to make fun of people in general, and the whole religion thing is an easy target because people get all sensitive about it. But personally, i'd rather not have faith, and then find out that there was a god after dying, than live my whole life thinking that there was a god, and then have to be terribly disappointed to find out there wasn't. Then again if there isn't a god, would I ever find out? I don't know. It is kind of like that saying though - hope for the best, expect the worst.

Now see, if you wanted real answers to this question, you should have left your religion out of it. Because you did not, it is clear you are making a statement, not asking a question. The statement this "question" makes is that your religion is right and all others are wrong. THAT is why people begin to leave negative comments.
I realize that people who make statements in this way do not realize what they are doing. You are pressing your own religion on people by stating that another or all others are wrong. This is one of the traits that seems to be common among Christians that makes people lash out. If you could change the way you present your religion, it would be far more acceptable to many. Also, representing your religion with comments like this only fuels the fire. I know it is unconscious, and as the dominating religion of the time and place, Christians take it for granted that such comments are "correct" and "accepted" by all. In fact, they are not and that begins to be the point of people who leave comments opposing your own view.
Just keep in mind how this looks to others and you may find the negative feedback you get is quite lessened. However, there are also simply people out there who will put their agenda in every comment they leave and those who want to be mean. Just like the negative view your statement gives of you, these people only bring negativity on themselves and do not get an intelligent message across. Challenge the assumptions.
You ask why people make fun of one group and then turn around and say another group is wrong. That does not leave much room for intelligent answers.

Everyone should believe what they need to believe.
I am an Atheist, but I respect religions and people of faith for their actions and integrity.
People often make fun of others out of ignorance or even fear. Sometimes they do it to mask their own insecurities.
Most people I have met are tolerant of my lack of faith. I am sorry if you have encountered the boorish sort that snicker at your beliefs. But usually with time and maturity, they grow up and so do you.
Someday soon you won't much care what they think. Stick to your friends of all faiths or lack thereof. If they are the ones making fun, then they are not your real friends.
There is also the small chance that you may need to develop a sense of humour about your beliefs too.
Any religion without humour is not likely a very good one!

I find it interesting that you would rather accept a comfortable lie that makes you happy, than learn the truth if it would make you feel bad. Is that all life is to you--feeling good, even if it means closing your eyes to truth? Don't you feel any urge to learn real answers to your problems, instead of just turning them over to an imaginary entity and then pretending they don't exist? Have you given up learning about the physical world around you--biology, astronomy, evolution, geography, etc.--for fear that it might reveal that there is no place for God? What a sad, empty life you must lead.
I want to know the truth about things, even if it means I feel embarrassment, sadness, or discomfort, because nothing in life is more important than truth. Truth is what will save humanity--not faith, not blind belief in the supernatural, not closing our minds to reality and opening them to fantasies of every kind, just because someone wrote them in a book. Discussion is how we learn about the world and each other. Ignoring one another, just "letting people believe what they want," only breeds suspicion, jealousy, and mistrust. If you know that someone's beliefs are misguided and possibly even dangerous, do you just ignore them and pretend everything will be alright in Candy Land, or do you ask questions and demand answers, so that they'll be forced to think about what they believe? Well, I know which answer you will choose; I choose the question-asking route.

You basically answered your own question. Hundred's of years ago relgion was the only thing. Almost everyone belived in something. As time has progressed and people got more and more freedom many chose not to belive any longer almost as a "fight the system" type of thing. Now take that feeling and pass it on to your kids, and their kids, and so on and so on, and you have a massive amount of non-belivers such as todays day in age.
However, unlike you, I think that more and more people are turning back to faith. You see more and more shows on TV these days that mention religion and show its acceptance. If thats a fad of the times its rather sad but at least the word is getting out there.

Azmurath beat me to it.
As for why people make fun of Christians, how about receiving hate-mail from them because you point out that over 75% of Humanity will be tossed into hell by your so-called 'god of love' (Rev 21:8 - unbelievers go to hell).
Given current population distribution and the ease with which children are indoctrinated into the religion of their parents, over 75% of the world's population (including children) get thrown into Hell to burn forever, etc.
Either that demonstrates an enormous amount of hatred on the part of God for Humanity, or God is not nearly so omniscient and omnipotent that he can create something worth loving.
He hates all of us and only (barely) tolerates those who claim they believe Jesus is the son of god.
How much self-loathing does it take to worship something like that?

Living as a non-beliver and finding out there is a God makes no difference. Believe what you want. The end result is the same.

I KNOW!!! As an atheist, I am embarrassed by people who criticize others for their beliefs, isn't the whole point of being an atheist so you don't have to worry about god? Why hate? We all need to relax a little more, live and let live.

Yea it is lame but have heart in knowong that people insult everyone for everything here and not just religion. They are thoughtless. People can believe what they want. Just be tolerant and do not let it hurt you. If you feel a biit bad it just means you are a real person and have kindness.

I respect your right, in the privacy of your own mind, to delude yourself however you want; but when someone comes along in a PUBLIC FORUM, regurgitating dogmatic slogans, and the myths, superstitions, fairy tales and fantastical delusions of an ignorant bunch of Bronze Age fishermen and wandering goat herders, and declaring them to represent some kind of cosmic 'TRUTH' (without the least bit of credible evidence)... well, by golly, that just HAS TO BE confronted.
