It depends on how you translate the Greek word that John used to mean god. The word he uses he never uses in reference to Almighty God, only in reference to the Word, to Satan, and to men. So, if it is toe translate as God, than the same must be true for Satan and Men. There are other places in the Bible where The Word is referred to using the word God, but at the most, they only say Might God, never Almight God. A Mighty God receives and had been created by an Almighty God.

As for the complete sentence, The Word was there in the very beginning, before all else took place. Do remember, the word god or God is still just a title, not a name or designation for the almighty. He has a name, and though there is dispute over how it should be translated, because the Jewish alphabet excluded vowels, the same can be said for the words Jesus or Christ. Unfortunately, people still fear using God's name, but when you read the Bible, remember that in every location where the word LORD appears in capital letters, that is where God's name has been removed and replaced. You will also notice that Jesus is never referred by the word LORD, in capital letters, in any Bible.

It means the Word, who is Jesus was in the beginning and was God from the beginning.

John 1:14 - And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

1 John 5:7 - For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.

Revelation 19:13 - And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

Dear Friend,
Namaste
Before Christianity there was only one religian that was "Vedic Dharm" and all over world people believe in Veda. For your informatkion, Veda means knowledge. and Knowledge is immortal which lives with GOD and God is also immortal. Even knowledge(GOD) never end when destruction of the whole universe starts.

Same way Word is also meaning GOD. Word means sound which never ends. that is the reason bible says ""
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."" which is absolutly correct.

For your information Bible contains many a things which derived from Veda. many stories are similar in vedic literature. I request you to please read vedic literature and then read bible, you will enjoy a lot.

Hope you will get quite satisfactory reply.

Everything about God is the word of God. Jesus, God, and the Holy Spirit, are the word of God. Everything that God created and said is the word of God. The Bible is also the word of God. I know its sometimes confusing.

I am not a christian but the most convincing argument with respect to that is that the word god in the last part (word is god) has also a meaning of divine.

so it could mean in the beginning was the word and the word was with god and the word was divine..

don't remember where i saw that..
I know its supposed to mean jesus but i don't buy it.

Before Jesus became "flesh" He existed as "The Word." In the beginning WAS" the "was" proves He was "past tense" in the beginning & His Pre-Existence as God & His Equality with God & The Holy Spirit. This also goes along with Genesis 1:1 "In the beginning God created the heavens & the earth." The word "God" is "Elohim" it is the plural form of Eloah & would be properly translated as "GODS." An Old Testament reference to the Trinity.

Word of God. Is it just 'but a word'?

It is the word that created the world.

Anyway, read on my pal, and it will not seem too shallow to ask such question. Answer is in the later part of the chapter, and other parts in that book of John.

The Word, (which the Koran called it Kalimahtulah, word of Allah) is Jesus.

This first verse of the book is to put it right that Jesus was there in the begining in creation, he was with God, and he is God.

Clear?

Actually, the word here is referring to Jesus. In the beginning was the Word (Jesus), and the word was with God (Jesus with God), and the word was God (Jesus being God... that whole Three is One thing).

I'm not sure what it means... but thats' what it's supposed to be referring to.

There's another text where Jesus says he is the the way, the truth, and the life.... So I guess he's also the word.
