Ulcerative Colitis is when the body's immune system attacks harmless bacteria in the colon. The constance attack of the immune system starts to cause inflammation and eventually ulcers in the colon wall. No one is sure if it is a problem with the immune system, or if the immune system is just responding to the actual problem.

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease marked by inflammation of the intestinal mucosa, which typically includes the anus, rectum, and the distal colon, and sometimes affects the entire large intestine. There are drugs that can decrease the symptoms and improve the inflammation. It can also lead to something called Chron's disease. Talk to the Dr about getting on some Aminossalicylates or corticosteroids.
