Chows are generally "one person " dogs. I would be inclined to not allow children to be too friendly. those prople who like them tend to defend them but the fact is, they are very territorial. I would not recomend them for a family pet with small children. Many groomers will not do them because of their tendancy for agression.

"While now commonly kept as a companion dog, the Chow Chow has a reputation for being a willful and independent breed that is sometimes difficult to train. They can be very aloof and wary of strangers. They often do not get along well with other dogs."

Chow Chows are not very friendly. Certainly not a recommended breed if you want a dog that's going to be around children.

Kid-friendly NO. Always monitor it. On the news some time ago there was 2 Chows and the parents I guess went to sleep or in another room and left the baby on the floor or somewhere. The two chows ate the baby and only left the stomach part.

All breeds of dogs can be "kid-friendly." It absolutely depends on the particular dog's personality and training. That being said, personality is the most important, and chows are known for tending towards aggression. This doesn't mean that all chows are inappropriate to have around children. A good breeder breeds aggression out of their dogs, but even a pound puppy can be an excellent dog if his/her character is non-aggressive.

I spent quite a bit of time around my neighbor's chow when I was about 7,8,9. He never once showed aggression toward me, and frequently rolled on his back to let me brush his belly in the summertime. It absolutely depends on the particular dog.

We use to own a chow dog. We called him , "Red" Very pretty animal and I really loved him. He was hit by a car and it popped it's eye out. He lived for awhile then someone poisoned him. Our dogs didn't live to long in the early 60's. It was sad. I had a black chow about seven years ago. He was good to me, but no one else could approach him. He'd kill other roaming dogs. This was out in the country. I would say no around kids. To high strung.

God, NO!!!!!! They can be loyal to the family, but don't get in a habit of the kiddos having friends over. They are a difficult breed. They look like teddy breas as puppies, but they were bred for guarding, and that is what they do! There are MANY groomers in my area that will not do ANY Chows. I know vets feel the same way about them too.

I alwasy thought the answer to this question was NO, however, my MIL has one and it has been absolutely GREAT with my kids from day one. When she got this dog, it had been abandoned in a back yard when the original owners moved. We had no idea what kind of personality this dog had, but she turned out to be great! She will be at my house if she hasn't seen the kids in a few days - when she sees my vehicle pull up at my MIL's house - she comes running to see the kids! She is awesome!

NO

all spitz breeds tend to be a bit unpredictable with chows being the worst - they are so unpredictable some groomers wont even accept them for grooming

i have a chow/ golden retriever mix and he is the most harmless loverboy i ever met. he loves kids and he thinks he is a human kid. i truly believe it is how u raise a dog which will determine how he gets along with kids. yes my chow baby loves my 10 yr old daughter, they get along just fine.

alot of a dogs attitude depends on how it is treated. If u get one and have kids i would get a puppy, and make sure it has training. I had a cousin that was 2 and got bit in the face by one...but the dog other than that one time was a wonderful dog..great around kids other than that one time
