I found out the day before coming to Iraq that I am the father of a beautiful 2 1/2 week old girl. The mother (my ex of 6 years) did not want me included in anything because she thought the child was her current bf's. I had to leave the States without getting anything taken care of as far as getting the child enrolled and covered by the Army (DEERS and Tricare). I am also having trouble getting the correct answers from Legal Assistance here as the majority of the people are Air Force. Can anyone tell me what paperwork is needed and what I need to do to take care of this? I know I can contact JAG back home, but was wondering if there were any alternatives. Thank you for the help!

WOW! Thanks for the quick responses everyone. To answer the question about proof, we had a DNA test done and that is how I found out I was the father. I got the results the day before I left to come to Iraq, which is why I wasn't able to take care of anything before I left. I'm still trying to get a hold of the mother about the birth certificate. We live 3 hours apart from each other, so it is a little difficult for her to go pick up paperwork for me, especially since she is not military and would have trouble getting on post. I am waiting for word back from my boss back home to see if he could help. Thank you all again and God bless!

if she can get onto the army base she can get the paperwork from deers filled out herself and then get it sent to you. this is what my sister had to do when my niece was born, but this was also with the navy. your best bet is to see if maybe you could find a navy yeoman (yn) over there in iraq. this person might be able to give you some advice. also maybe you should try get a hold of a buddy back in the state who can talk to someone in psd for you. but before anything else the military might want a dna test to prove you are the father since you are not married. however i might be wrong about that.

I am in the Army National Guard and work at the state HQ and once worked in the DEERS and ID card office. You need to take to the DEERS office the following:
Birth Certificate and Social Security Card (if she has one)
They definitely need the birth certificate.
The ID Card offices are usually the same as the DEERS office. Once this is done, she will automatically be eligible for Tricare. I would then call the tricare rep to get yourself a card for her.

First off would be her giving you a certified copy of the blood tests and birth certificate with your name on it. If she had doubts then she should have told you, but if she is looking for support because you are deployed then you need proof...
And when you have "proof", you still need a birth certificate to enroll her in DEERS and get working on visitation.
You will have alot to deal with, and alot of time on your hands at the same time- your commander can help, but you might get more help from the Chaplain. They can also help you with JAG, at both ends- the JAG in country can talk to and work with the JAG close to your daughter to help you get this done quickly and effectively, allowing you to keep your mind on the mission and make it home in one piece to see your new daughter.
Good luck, congrats and be safe!

Your best bet is to go through your BN S-1 if possible. They should be able to point you in the right direction. If not, Your 1SG should. Try and go to PSB and enroll into deers there. If you are stationed mainly with Air Force, then you might have to find a phone number or fax number for an Army Personell office. I know that Camp Liberty is Division Headquarters for 4ID. Explain your situation over the phone and they are usually pretty helpful. FAX might be your only option. Good Luck!
