the top 5 brands of speakers in performance

Well, there is no official ranking of what speakers are the best. Everyone has their own opinion because everyone’s ears are a little different. I am an audio engineer so my friends and family often ask me what they should buy. I usually suggest the following brands, in no particular order. Also by “Performance” I assumed you meant great sounding speakers, and not how loud you can possibly get your music.

Polk Audio: I have always been impressed with this brand. They are powerful, clear, and fairly realistic. I have heard quite a few of their speakers and I remain a huge fan. I have no complaints, I always tell people to listen to some Polk speakers.

JBL: Certainly one of the biggest names in audio, JBL speakers are flashy because people know the name. They are usually very loud, and very solidly built. Most sound fairly decent to me, some people absolutely love them. They certainly have a sound to them. They are usually not my personal first choice because they seem to sound overly processed. Nonetheless a top brand.

Onkyo: If you are looking for a smaller setup and want dynamite performance, onkyo has some great options. They are a top name in the Hi-Fi receiver business, but not a big name in speakers. However, I heard a home theater in a box system of theirs recently and was blown away. For 250.00 it offered a full 5.1 setup with receiver that really was first rate.

Bose: I’m tempted not to recommend Bose to people because I personally don’t like them. But the bottom line is that they are well loved by many people, especially people who are not audiophiles. Audiophiles don’t like them because they have internal EQ’s that are supposed to make them sound bigger and more powerful. But the reality is that many speaker brands have EQs in them to give them the sound the brand prefers. So check them out if you don’t mind paying the markup, they are one of the best selling names in speakers.

Klipsch: If you are primarily watching movies, Klipsch speakers are really a good choice. I usually try to stay away from their lower lines, but their better lines are really wonderful speakers. Smooth, powerful, and they have a great realistic sound. One of the most commonly used speaker brands in movie theaters, and movie production.

Velodyne: One of the highest regarded names in home theater subwoofers. Excellent products across the board. Powerful.

DLK: I use a set of DLK speakers in my home theater. I get comments on them all the time, especially from my audiophile friends. This company was very small and was based in Minneapolis until the early 90’s when it shut down. If you can find some of these speakers, they really sound great.

Infinity: I have a set of infinity speakers in my bedroom. Good speakers with clean sound. They do sound a little processed at times. However, I have always regarded Infinity as one of my favorites in speaker brands. Their speakers are easy to listen to. They are also dynamite for car audio.

McIntosh: This is supposedly the cream of the crop in speakers. I have a friend who spent 65,000 on a set (10) of these. I personally didn’t think they sounded better then my DLKs. Many people say this is the top name in audio. It is the brand that Bentley puts in their cars. I don’t think they are special except for the price. If you have the money, look at them, see what you think. They certianly are extremely loud.

I hope this was helpful.

I have Polk all around and after 11 years of very regular use, they still sound great. I often think about changing, but when I go listen, I don't find anything in my price range that compares to what I already have. I'm about to upgrade to 7.1 and I'll just add some more Polk speakers to the system.
