The Correct Way------a firm, symmetrical watermelon that is free from bruises, cuts or dents. The watermelon should be heavy for it's size. Watermelon is 92% water, most of the weight is water. The underside of the watermelon should have a creamy yellow spot from where it sat on the ground and ripened in the sun. http://www.watermelon.org/watermelon_selection.asp

I agree with thumbing to get a crisp sound and if the stem is still attached make sure it is not green this means it was pick to early and will not be ripe. If the stem is brown then you got your self a good melon. Try the seedless too they are very sweet.

Sit on it, and if it pops out a seed, I know it's a keeper.

Or spank it. Cause it's kinkier that way. If it has enough girth in it, and enough weight, no seeds, then go for it.

Tapping a hollow sound is good but the end needs to be yellow in color to show it's ripe too.

It should be extremely firm with no soft spots.
The stripes should be broken / have gaps in them.
When you thump it there should be a nice hollow sound.
