The sacrament of confession has been part of the Sacred Tradition, the Christian Faith, of the Church since the beginning. It was given to us by Jesus Christ (read John 20: 19-23). He gave the apostles the power and authority to forgive sins, and that authority was passed down through the ages to present day.

Not just Catholics but all Christians confess their sins.Your sins do not count against you and now you no longer have to be stoned to death or burn animals for sacrifice to make attonement for your sins. Jesus was the perfect Lamb to redeem you from your sins that made you filthy. All you must do is confess to the Lord. (1 John 1:9) and if you sinned against another, also ask them for forgiveness. You no longer need to keep to the law to make you righteous. We live by faith believing in Jesus and following Him, obeying His commandments out of love not duty.

It is one of the 7sacrements that were established during Vatican 1. I believe that Jesus died for our original sins,(Adam and Eve) so we still have sins to be forgiven for.

Because when we sin, we harm not just ourselves and God, but also the community in which we live.
The Priest steps in as the representative for that community and accepts the "public" apology of the penitent.
If we only "confess" our sins to God, we may square things with Him, but we still haven't done right by our fellow human beings, who are all part of the Body of Christ.

" As you can see our sins are forgiven at salvation but our relationship with God on a daily basis needs to stay in close fellowship. Therefore you need to confess your sin as it occurs to keep that right relationship with God." if you want to read the rest of the text you can visit this site >> http://www.gotquestions.org/confession-forgiveness.html

Catholics are supposed to confess is more correct to say. There are a lot of them that don't or hardly ever do unless their minds or souls are bothering them and they need to get it out.
It is a shame based sect of Christianity more so that some others.
It is the people who are in charge of the church that need to confess such acts as making people believe they can pray there loved ones out of hell for a price that you have to keep paying our your loved one will be sent back to hell.
Its all about using money to get you or your family out of their own folly.God could care less about money.

Because the Catholic church has misconstrued Scripture to say that only a priest can forgive sins.

They don';t have to. They should confess to Jesus. Catholicism is an occult religion. The Pope is a fraud and the anti-christ.
