The best way to reply to such a rude response is to stare at the person for a second or two and then say, "wow - I didn't mean to offend you. I'm sorry you had a bad day. I hope things get better." And then walk away.
Giving a rude response will not be in your favor and hopefully the person will regret their outburst.

Not exactly, I would just smile back and say "Well that's just peachy keen". It's not that you need a response, you need better perception skills, no offense. But basically Jane wanted John to know that she had a crappy day instead of asking.
If Jane went into detail about her day and instead of the sarcastic comment explained why her day was shittasticful, in my experience, John probably would have gotten bored with Jane's day or thought that it was futile drama and such. Which it possibly was.
Best of luck to John, Jane, and rhetorical responses.

Ha.. yes I know the problem. I always go with their sarcasm with more sarcasm, they get a little confused wether you realise they are sarcastic or not.
EG. "Yes I did notice the aura thats why I asked, have you been sanctified today is that is what happening? You are such a wonderful person and it glows out of you so much today, like pretty flowers. or spring time... god damn it flowers IN spring time... all blossoming." etc.
They get annoyed if you go on and on. but often you both have a good laugh.

just say sorry, even if you dont think its your fault, then try some quick consoling then walk away. leave on good terms, then do more in depth talking about her day once she cools off a little bit, and make her feel better. you need to try and realize that even though you may be going out/married to/best friends with this one person, she was rude because of her frustration at her day, not you.

Sydney knows what she's about. Rise above it, despite this person's rudeness. You will feel better for it. Don't let them drag you down 'cause they had a bad day.
