You need to caramelize the onions.
Slice the onions really thin. Heat up a cast iron pan on low heat, put a little bit of oil in the pan, then spread the onions in the pan in a single layer and leave them alone-do not stir until they start to brown. Then stir. Then leave them alone again. Keep doing this until they are an even carmel colour. You can add a little bit of sugar-like half a teaspoon or less per onion. And the trick is to be patient. But oooo it's so worthwhile.

Some onions can be sweeter than others but all of them taste great if you grill the onion before putting it on your hot dog. You can also saute the onion in a little oil with bell peppers too.
Others like the onion chopped into tiny pieces so that they are not to strong tasting. For me I like them both and I could eat onion on just about anything. Good luck hot dog fan.

I like to thinly slice red onions rather than diced as it is less messy and less of a bitey taste of onion.
The brown and the white onions have a stronger bite.
I use sauerkraut for the sour bite taste and just mustard.
Go Kobayashi!!! you hotdog eating champ.
Try Hebrew National brand hotdogs they are the best.

I think white onions are best. Just chop then up really small and put them in the bun with a hot dog and some mustard.

Dude ignore all the idiots who are telling to put raw onion on. You get your frying pan out, slice up some onions , get out the frying oil and fry your onions in there and put a lid on so they sweat, sounds icky but very tasty

Slice, dice, or cut them into whatever shape you want. Put them in a pan with a small amount of vegetable oil (just enough to keep them from burning or sticking to the pan), Saute (cook) them over low heat, stirring frequently, until they look sort of transparent. Some people like to add red & green bell peppers into the mix. Good luck! Hope it goes well for you!

Just slice them and chop them up. No cooking needed.
