Trying to think of ideas for first dates, that go beyond the conventional dinner and a movie. Anyone have any fun date ideas that aren't that common?

Depends on where you live too...
I think first dates should be daytime dates. Keeps it light and you get to know the person better without all the romantic camouflage of candlelight and alcohol.
Maybe going to a Museum/art exhibit together, building a kite together and flying it at a local park, going to a pottery place where you can paint a ceramic piece together, going to a car or horse race, or finding an unusual little breakfast joint that's quirky or near a sightseeing local..... It's refreshing to hear that you want to make this effort. Not too many left like that. Have fun.
