I think many people have tried to assassinate the Pope because he has made a great difference in the world to others,and because many people believe in other religions.

Every Sage or Saint always has someone try to kill them through out history.... Hate is needed to show the benevolence of Love.
- God had Lucifer
- Jesus had Judas
- Buddha had Devadatta
- Rama had the Demon Ravana
so on and so forth.
Even earthly ones had opposition, what more the ones with Divine Titles:
- Mother Teresa was given Hell by the Vatican during her early years when she wanted to "bend" the rules to allow her to go out and minister to the pains of the people
- Gandhi was shot dead for promoting non-violence as a way of protest against the pillagers of his beloved country
Since to the Catholics the Pope is Divine on Earth, most assured emanations of Judas on Earth will have to arise.

Same reason some people try to assassinate other heads of state. They have a difference of opinion and think killing is the answer.

I only know of one Turkish Muslim who shot Pope John Paul in the 80's...the Pope talked to him in jail and forgave him...
Why do people assasinate anyone? The pontiff's no different...

Because they have different beliefs and believe that they should not be ruled under a seperate religion anymore. Or they are really just very radical activist towards their own relgion or they could have been hired to assasinate him.
