It's kinda-sorta from Shakespeare. The line from The Tempest is:

“Misery acquaints a man with strange bedfellows.”

but what you'll most commonly hear from people is:

"Politics makes strange bedfellows."

"Politics make strange bedfellows" was coined when John Adams and Benjamin Franklin went to New Brunswick in June 1776 to check on the condition of the troops, and they wound up sharing a room (and a bed).
