fighter jets are unstable by their nature of going the limit while carrying a pilot. They need constant maintenance and resupply to keep flying and the aircraft companies send technicians wherever they sell fighter jets. Within months after an embargo a countries fighter jets will not be operational and it is typical even in our Air force that only 80 or 90 percent are operational at any given time. High tech high maintenance supersonic jet that can also seek out and destroy targets. Very expensive investment. Drones will soon make obsolete and F22 is last fighter jet to be authorized. Drones don't have to carry a pilot so can easily and cheaply outperfom any manned aircraft. A drone is just a missile that may or may not fire another missile and can stay aloft for long periods and be guided remotely from ground or another aircraft. If a drone fails during a mission or flight it is simply aborted.

Why don't you just ask how many angels are on a pin head?
World wide several Hundred jets. Most Air forces are small. Most have fighter forces under 50 planes. Due to arms deals and retirements and crashes, a acturate number is difficult to make.

According to the US Secretary of State Office:
There were 1,424 Supersonic Combat Aircraft delivered by suppliers worldwide between 1986 and 1997.
This number doesnt give a total of all jets existing but it gives you a rough idea. Its much more than just hundreds.
