OK, thank you - Mathew 13:32
For those of you who admonished me to read my Bible - I didn't know where it was in the first place - that's why I asked the question. Now it appeares you should all read your own.

Maybe that will help others see that the question has been answered and it DOES say mustard seeds are the smallest. Thank you "infallible" Bible.

The Bible says you can have faith the size of a mustard seed, not that a mustard seed is the smallest seed. Read it again.

I'll echo what everyone else has already said...(and I won't requote what it does say, because others have done a good job). What I can add to the discussion is that I have seen a mustard seed, and they are very very small! Probably about the size of a comma. I imagine that knowing what a mustard seed looked like was pretty common knowledge for the culture at the time.

The Bible does not say that the mustard seed is the smallest seed. The anology is to faith: even a small amount of faith can move mountains, like a mustard seed grows into a large plant.

Mark 4:31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth,
When you look at a mustard seed it doesn't look like the smallest of seeds. But that's because it is really a mass of very tiny seeds. Is it the smallest seed in the world? The tiny seeds that come from the "clump" that looks like one seed is in fact the smallest seed of any plant in the known world at the time Jesus spoke these words.

It says if you have faith, as a grain of mustard seed, then you can move mountains.
The fact that mustard seed is very tiny is quite evident in nature, but the Bible does not call them the smallest seeds.

Matthew 13:31-32 reads (emphasis is mine):
Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field; Which indeed is THE LEAST OF ALL SEEDS: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.

Luke 13:18-19
"Then Jesus asked, "What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to? It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air perched in its branches."
I don't believe it says 'smallest' -- rather, it just notes that the original seed is VERY SMALL.
And the plant that grows from it is enormous, just like a seed of faith compares to the kingdom of God. =) Hope that helps.

Halleluia! I am saved!
I believe in mustard seeds, and I have always wanted a house with a view of mountains. Sorry about that, all you folks living in Chicago, but the Rockies are coming to Illinois!
