IF you can afford it, give it a try

We have some excellent public schools in our neighborhood so it was a hard decision on whether to send my children to them or to the private school (Catholic).

The private schools are very expensive and most require a lot of parental volunteering to boot. We went with the private school after much discussion and we are happy we did.

The class sizes were much smaller so they did learn more than they would have at the public schools. The rules were more strict, and the grading "curve" was higher too so they had to work much harder for those "A"s.

My children went to the private school for K-8 and then we sent them to the public school for high school. Once they went to the high school, they were surprised at how "easy" it was for them.

They learned the right way to study for tests and they had the disipline on how to keep a journal of all the homework they had and to get it done right away instead of procrastinating.

The added bonus for us was we did not have to be taking them to CCD classes after school because they had their religion during the day. It meant less running after school (we had enough of that with the sports).

There are some very good private schools out there and then there are some that just meet the basic minimum. You have to look around.

Ours offered everything...it had art, gym, music, and computers, there were clubs (chess, art, foreign language, volunteering clubs, environmental clubs, etc.), they entered tournaments, and there was even foreign languages.

Good luck!

It is very good but expensive, and if your child has any special needs than it is not wise to go with private schooling. My daughter was in a catholic school, but we found out that she has ADD and at private schools they wont do any kind of special classes. But if your child does not have any needs then it is the best thing to do, they get a better education. They are more advanced than the public schools.

I think that private or religious schooling is perfect for the elementary and middle school years... grades K to 8.. This is the time when they are most impressionable, when they're learning the rules..

I don't agree with private schooling for high school. High school prepares you for the real world. It's preparing you for the drama, politics, and interaction of life with people of all kinds.

My sister in law went to a private school for her high school years. She came out.. not prepared for real life..

I personally don't like it.

I think it encourages a closed mind, one that embraces only one way of thinking. Religious schooling often teaches religious doctrine as fact, instead of as "religious doctrine". When religious thoughts become intertwined with science, it can lead to confusion and misconception.
