Ok first you have to determine the restaurant you are working in. You also have to have a good attitude and take all the bullshit of waiting tables (harsh but true). You will make a little over $2 bucks an hour - but that ALL goes towards taxes. If you have ANY experience, or if you go in and learn the RIGHT way, you can EXPECT 15% of each tables total on AVERAGE. This means that you get great customers that tip 20% or more. You also will get jerks who will give you nada. The more expensive the food, the larger the tab= bigger the tip... And you have to learn how to UPSELL - meaning if they order a vodka tonic - you automatically say something like "would you prefer Grey Goose, Stoli, or Ketel One?" Don't just take the order and bring them the cheapest drink. if the respond by saying give me your house vodka - you tried.
always try to sell an extra drink per person, an extra appetizer, an extra dessert.... making that check higher and giving you more to put in your pocket...
Good Luck!!!!

i used to work at Pei Wei Asian Diner and i used to get about 150 dollars in tips a week. i only worked 4 days a week, i was a runner and a cashier. If you see the same people come into the restaurant almost every day try to remember their names so that you can greet them by their name or try to remember their favorite dish , they will like this and they might just leave a good tip. Also try to keep moveing .. even if there is nothing to do , go clean the windows or mop or ask your manager what you could do. This will make your boss consider giving you a race and customers like to see people working not standing around.
good luck

I work as a server at Bob Evans in Ohio...
Tips are decent in the mornings (the infamous Bob Evan's breakfast!)... but for most restauraunts, the money is to be made in the evenings. =)
Also -- try to work Sunday mornings, when all the church people go out to eat after services. I make at least forty dollars in cash tips alone (five-hour shift). That doesn't count credit, which varies from week to week.
Also, they may night hire you as a server straight-away. Most managers will prefer if you begin as a hostess or busser, if you lack experience. I had to wait two months before I began waiting tables.
Best of luck to you! ^_^

my sister was a waitress and it really depends on where you work to get good tips. if you work by an airport you'd make a killing, because its such a high traffic area. and its also good to work in a bigger more popular restaurant, thats preferebly more expensive; like P F Changs.
my sister worked at ihop and a family of 9 gave her $1 tip. they ordered $80 worth of food. dont they know the 15% rule?

I waitressed at the Crabhouse....I took home about 120 a night....but worked my butt off for it...there were no busboys or tip sharing...so that was good....but, people were paying 20 bucks per dinner so they were extra needy....
I also waitressed Applebees...only made 60-75 there, but it was much less stress...
Then finally, I waitressed a local bar....took in 150 per night...if you are equipped to handle drunks, this is easy money.... the bar I worked let us tell patrons to f-off....and then a lot of them are so drunk they overtip....
I love waitressing for the flexibility, but hate it for the putting up with crap....with a smile!!

It really depends on where you work. I worked at a local italian restaurant for 3 hours a night and would take home about 80 a night.
