My landlord charged me a 100.00 pet fee when I moved in. He says the pet fee is non-refundable but I heard it was illegal. I have moved out and my dogs (2 dogs) did not destory anything so I feel I should get that back. Just like any other security deposit. Also it was never written on the lease that it was non-refundable. It just says pet fee. Please help and thanks again. P.S. I live in Ohio.

Yes I signed a lease that says PET FEE, not one that says NON-REFUNDABLE PET FEE. What gives him the right to change it to non-refundable after I moved in.

What was the pet fee for? I'm not understanding the complete situation? What state are you in?

It is not illegal to charge a non-refundable deposit on a pet if you want the pet store to hold the pet for you.

I take non-refundable depostis on puppies. That way they think twice before "holding" the puppy. Also, if that puppy is spoken for, it cannot be found a home and if the first person bakes out for any reason, I still have to look for a great home for the puppy who we though HAD a home.

If you mean when leasing an apartment, it is legal and it's thrown away money.
