We have an 11year old staying with us for the summer. Whenever she is on the internet, I am beside her. I want to know what she is doing and who she is talking to and what she is talking about. She is accustomed to being online completely alone; but she understands that I monitor her because I love her and want to keep her safe. Do you do the same?

Oh yes we do! We have 3 children (between 11 and 7) all of whom use the PC along with the internet. I have explained to them that with the inernet it makes our small town alot bigger, and like being out at a fuction or a telephone call the same rules apply. Do not give any info out. Not only do we sit and monitor but we also have time limits and the rules apply to every one in the house as well as guests.

My kids are 12 and 14 and I monitor their on-line usage. I also have Norton Internet Security and can have certain websites or content blocked. It's a great tool. I bought it after my son did a search for a game and one of the options he clicked on had nudity on it. You need to always monitor the kids, you never know what can happen. They also know that it is not allowed to sign up on any website that asks for any information. I don't care what type of information they want, my children need to get my permission before signing up for anything.

that is excellent supervision
i would do the same
dont monitor every word she types nor sit right next to her but be in the same room ...
i watch my boy like a hawk and every now and then get something that is next to him and quickly glance at the screen
i dont allow them to google sites unless i am sitting next to him and ask him where he got the site names he does want to visit.
i will always only let them onl the computer when i am able to supervise
our children need to be protected ... becasause this is not your child i think you are doing the right thing by caring for her as if she was...
i have always been strict with the computer and it will be many many years before i stop doing what i am doing

I wish I could show this to my husband!

my 11 year old step-son is on the net 90% of the time he is with us, and his father doesn't monitor what hes doing on there at all. I have seen him several times looking at pictures of naked women on myspace, and when I've told my husband about it, he talks to the boy and the boy says he wasn't, so that's the end of the conversation.

I have a 13 year old son, and I check his history every day or so. I also do not allow him to have internet in his bedroom. Our computer is in the living room where I can watch him when he is online.
