Being totally honest all the time can be extremely hurtful and unnecessary! I never lie in matters of great importance, I will do a little white lie now and then (like tell Auntie Mame her crystal polo pony is beautiful), if someone is upset because someone else is being mean and abusive to them, I will never lie and help them as much as I can; And lie to impress people, why bother, just be yourself; if they don't like you for that, why bother with them. Plus, in order to lie, you have to have a really great memory to keep everything organized....too much time wasted for what? Only little white lies are OK....

Lying is wrong in all respects, but we all do it either to save faith or not to hurt someone. White lies are OK I think because, they really hurt no one. If you lie to someone to not upset them and they find out later about the lie it hurts worse than the truth. It is not O K to lie to impress someone then you are lying to yourself too.

I'm about 95% honest and no you shouldn't lie to impress people, you should rarely like to save someone's feelings and you should TRY not to lie as much as possible.

I prefer not to lie at all. However, I've also learned just because it crosses my mind, doesn't mean it has to come out of my mouth.
There are questions people ask that they don't want an honest answer to...like women who ask "Does this make me look fat?" They aren't look for honesty...they are looking for confirmation that you still love them.
Or when a man says "Do you think I'm losing my hair?" He doesn't want you to tell him he's starting to look like a cue ball. He's also looking for confirmation that you still love him.
Not answering those questions, isn't a lie...honesty was never what was being asked for.
As to lying to not upset someone...I've been known to say "You aren't going to like my answer...are you really sure you want me to answer?" People who know me, never say "Yes, give me your answer". Then I try not to hang out with stupid people.
As to lying to impress...no point..first you have to remember the lie, and second it always comes back to bite you in the tush.

I think that it is impossible to be completely honest all of the time!!! It doesn't make it right. But it is unavoidable. I am talking about small everyday lies like "of course I love your new haircut" or "yes your meatloaf is very good" Do not lie to impress or gain that is just Wrong in every sense of the word.
