Welcome to the practice of psychiatry in the United States. I have found that going to my family doctor, someone I trust and who knows me well, is a much better choice. He spends more time, knows more about my life overall, and is also much more pleasant. Unless you are a stark, raving lunatic (which you obviously aren't), get rid of the psychiatrist and go to your family doctor.
Also, whatever you do, don't stop taking your medications without your doctor's permission. I read some of the answers people gave about what your medications are for, and some people are correct and some aren't. Your health is extremely important, so my answer to your question is to ask your doctor what they are for.
In addition, trust your instincts about the psychiatrist. How a doctor who talks to you for five minutes can be qualified to prescribe three medications to you is beyond ridiculous. Please go to your family doctor.
I am sorry you are having some problems, and I hope you feel better soon. Take good care of yourself.

Well Effexor is an antidepressant, I am not sure about Topamax,
Resperadal is an antipsychotic I believe. You can go to
Medlineplus.com & look up these meds. I do not know your case
but I take 6 total meds - Cymbalta, Remeron, Klonopin, Vistaril,
Dalmane, & Seroquel - I call it my "cocktail" all these meds
work together - I cannot sleep so they all work together. (the last
3 listed) The others are for depression & anxiety. Did this Dr.
do a work-up on you? Are you sleeping at night? Do you have
anxiety? Sometimes Psychiatrists use a combination to better
work together. Is it a Psychiatrist you went to? I would question it
too, if it was just an MD because they don't know how they all
work like a Psychiatrist does. You can go to the website & print
out stuff on meds if that helps you... If you not comfortable -ASK!
They have to tell you why & what the meds are for! If not, I would
see another Dr. or ask the nurse...

First, keep taking your meds until you see a doctor. Effexor at least is not one you should just stop taking. I don't know about the others.
Next, remember that most meds are prescribed for multiple purposes, so don't be scared off by the first illness treated with it that you see. Google your meds online and look for the National Institute of Health and other medical sites. Your yahoo answers include wrong and uncertain info.
Tomorrow, make an appoint with a psychiatrist. That's the type of doc trained in mental health drugs. It's a good idea to get a second opinion, but if that's going to take a while, be pushy for an immediate appt with the doc you saw and get him/her to explain. That is part of their job and they know it.
Also, think about seeing a licensed psychologist or therapist. They can't prescribe meds but they are trained at listening and help you to understand what's going on in your life. They also work with psychiatrists so that both know what's going on. Google Finding a Therapist, there's a good short article on what you should consider.
Have faith in yourself. If you do not believe that you have received adequate care, including an explanation for the drugs prescribed, you probably haven't.

A lot of times Risperdal and Topamax are used if the person is aggressive/agitated.Topamax is actually a seizure medication. Both Risperdal/Topamax have also been used as a sedative. Next time you go to the doc. ask a lot of questions!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like medications used to treat bipolar disorder. I am not familiar with topomax; but I do know that Effexor is for depression, Risperdal is an antipsychotic, and I am going to guess that topomax would be the mood stabilizer. Your doctor really should have fully explained your diagnosis and treatment plan with you before prescribing you any medications.

Topamax can be used for many things but is basically an antidepressant. It has been used to prevent cravings for addicts, and even some other things I can't remember. The Risperdal is a sleep medication.

You are taking three major prescriptions, prescribed to you by a doctor who doesn't know your medical history and did not spend any time with you? You need a new doctor, and quickly. Have you been diagnosed with depression and general anxiety disorder. Do you suffer from seizures? Are you suffering from schizophrenia and have you been told, by a doctor that you are not in touch with the realities of life???? That is what these drugs are used for. You need a medical advocate, someone who can go to the doctors with you and get questions answered for you if you are unable to do so for yourself. Do you have a friend or family member who can act as your advocate??? Contact your local mental health department to get help; if you need to, but get help with these questions and medications Now.

You can look all of these medicines up on your computer. Type them in your search box and read what they are about. If you know after reading them that you don't have the symptoms that are associated with these medicines then don't take them. Go back to the dr. who prescribed them to you. Ask him why were you prescribed them if they have no association with your symptoms or condition. Definitedly go back to the dr.'s if you have that gut feeling about not taking these medications.

Yep. My present puppy had democratic mange mites... it used to be a studying revel in for me on account that it in no way occurred with my prior puppies. Three visits to the vet & ivermectin photographs did not clear up it... I attempted all of the stuff I located on the net, peroxide & borax, benzoyl peroxide... good I did not check out the pour kerosene for your puppy aspect... then I ultimately located the rationale for what reasons them on a vet's internet site, switched her to grain-loose nutrition and it went away instantly, has in no way back... that used to be a yr & a part in the past, she's 2 now and nonetheless on utterly grain-loose nutrition.

Do research online and go to another doctor. If you don't feel that he really looked into your case, you're better off without him. Stick with a doctor that you feel comfortable with.
