There are plenty of opportunities in the private sector. However, I have a brother in the Navy. He has been in 17 years and some change. He collected reinlistment bonuses almost everytime he re upped. If you stay in you'll be able to retire for sure after 20 years. That may not be true in the private sector.

Only down side, he's been to Iraq 3 times and is on his way back.

Only one person can decide that answer...YOU. Take time when you can and think about (or write down) the pros and cons for staying in and for getting out. Be honest with yourself about each one and take it from there. I would give consideration to changing your rating now vs later if you stay in. If you start something new now your going to get more experience and won't be in a situation where you are possibly put into a leadership position down the road and your subordinates know more about the job than you do. What do you want to do? Train for a new rate? Stick around for a career? Take an early out and go to college?

No matter how well you like the military, there will come a day when they make you take the uniform off. What do you want to do then?

no one can make that decision for u. My hubby was active duty for 15 years got out. We went thru a really rough time. He's back in the reserves now but wishes he'd stayed in the first place.
my dad was navy got out went reserves after 5 years active and is so glad he did the extra pay helps.
I'd think long and hard weigh both sides and if u pray then do so.

Has the Navy taught you a skill you could use on the outside that you want to do? Then leave. Otherwise let the Navy teach you a skill you would like to do and can make money doing when you get out. You don't have to wait to switch rates. You could do it now if you want.

I would get out now, especially since you have some job skills. I have been in for 5 yrs and I still have 3 more to go and I am hating it. If you still are not sure try extending for a year to think it over.

i think you've already answered your own question. Liking your job is half the battle, why not stick it out for another year...you already know you'll need to do something else in a few years so it's not like it will come as a surprise. One year is not that long.

I say get out. Military life is hard and now that you have a good foundation, you should get an easier job:) Good luck.

Is this your first enlistment? How many years do you already have in? Can you STAR? What do you mean by disestablished? Is your rating going away or just your particular job? If your rating goes away then you should be able to reenlist with some training. Think about it, Pray about it, and talk to your Chiefs.
