stay away from Walmart, Kmart, Target, etc.
Check out your local bike shops and ask. Some sell used bikes on consignment.
Online retailers like Performance.com are OK.

For used bikes, theres craiglist, Mtbr (www.mtbr.com) has a classified section.
For new bikes, depending on the level of bike that you want.
