It usually becomes more pronounced until the baby is about five days old and then begins to fade. It is unlikely to cause any problems or harm to the baby. It is caused by the essential breakdown of excess blood cells the baby needs to carry out but finds difficult because the newborn liver is immature.

It is rarely a cause for concern. Sometimes there are complicating factors such as prematurity or illness which slow down the baby's ability to deal with the jaundice causing it to be more pronounced.

There are some more rare problems, which cause jaundice levels to be more serious and need specialist treatment. Very few babies need this level of intervention. Most have the earlier type called 'Physiological Jaundice'.

Both of my babys had it. My first one got over it by her self. The doctor drew bllod from her heel for 3 days. My second one was not caught as fast and her levels got up to 28 where the doctor put her in the hospital. There are some severe complacations that can come from it with out treatment. Some babys bodys mature a little faster adn then others need some help. Breast feeding seems to make it worce.

Jaundice is common in newborns. I can be caused by breastfeeding, or it can be caused by a build up of excess billirubin in the baby's system. If it is caused by a build up of billirubin, it can cause damage to internal organs and even death. You should take your baby to the doctor to make sure the jaundice is not caused by a build up of billirubin. It is easy to treat if that is the case though, just expose your baby to sunlight on a regular basis (make sure it isn't direct sunlight though, as this can cause sunburn), maybe by putting his crib by a window. If it is really severe, your doctor will prescribe a special light for your baby to lay under. It should only last a few days, but if you are concerned, you really should take your baby to the doctor.

I think you mean jaundice...it's a vitamin definency. your babys doctor will have to determine the actions to take. Sometimes its not serious and they can gain the vitamin at home by getting a little more sunlight and then it's gone in a few days, or if it's a serious case they might have to go back to the hospital. Only your doctor can tell you for sure.

It can lead to severe liver damage and death. I was born with it. The infant is simply laid under a sunlamp for a few minutes a day and given drugs to regulate the chemical in the liver. Jaundice isn't a serious condition if treated promptly.

You don't have to worry about neonatal jaundice. Because a newborn hasn't fully developed liver function, for the first week or so he or she isn't capable of breaking down bilirubin, a metabolite from aged red blood cells, and pass it over to be excreted by kidneys. So the baby will display this yellowish discoloration due to the build up of bilirubin. As the growth of liver matures, it will be capable of breaking down bilirubin, the discoloration will disappear.

Usually, this is treated by exposing the neonate to blue light, which converts bilirubin into another metabolite that can be excreted by kidneys.

If you're a new mom, it is normal to worry, but don't. It is very common in newborns and they can start treating at the hospital right away, and then you can rent the equipment to continue treatment, which is easy. You should also put the baby by the window some and let the sun shine on him. Definitely see his dr and start treatment asap, should not be left untreated - does NOT go away by itself. You also need to make sure to get his levels checked by having lab draw blood. Good luck!

Don't mean to laugh, but it's yellow jaundice. It's fairly common in new-Born's,and usually doesn't last long. Ask your doctor about this.

Haven't they put the baby under the Bili lights in the hospital? Jaundice is caused by a malfunction of the Kidneys and having too much billirubin in their systems. Didn't your pediatrician explain any of this to you. You don't want it to go untreated, they have to take blood tests. Could cause a problem with the Kidneys. You need to take the baby to doctor and have him explain everything to you. Or go to the ER.
