The government is alledgedly going to issue some kind of identification that is supposed to be tamper proof. I'm with you in that how does an employer have the opportunity to check on a person when the government itself has privacy acts?

Yes the employers should be held accountable. They were not doing things as they are suppose to. Whenever I filled out paperwork for a job I had to show proof that I was a citzen or legally able to work in the US. Usually they ask for a birth certificate, immigration paperwork, etc. I usually showed my drivers license and my social security number.
Just because a person checks that they are a legal resident does not mean it is true. The employer should be validating ss#. You don't need to discriminate. If you validate the SS# on all employees it is not discrimination. I can give someone a ss# it doesn't mean it is real. There is identity theft and such.
If you choose to be an employer than you need to follow all the laws including making sure your workers are legally allowed to work in the US. You have a responsibility if you don't want to follow it don't be the boss.

I think employers should be held accountable for checking to make sure a SS# is valid. I was in a position for many years where I did the hiring and I was held accountable. If an applicant lies about anything on the application, it is invalid and they should not be hired. It is not discrimination; it is a simple matter of business to not want to hire anyone who is not appropriate and those who lie or withhold required information are not appropriate. I am in no way against immigration as long as it is done legally. But illegal immigration is just that: illegal. So employers should be held accountable. And I would back a law that made it illegal for anyone to rent, lease or sell housing to anyone who is in the country illegally.

When you hire a person, they must complete an I-9 form, which they must show the employer a drivers license, green card, passport or some other photo identification and a social security card. They must be examined by the employer, and the employee and employer then sign the form stating that everything is true to the best of their knowledge.
Now, if the employer is just relying on someone giving them a social security number, they are in violation of a federal law, and homeland security will come looking for them. They are the ones now in control of the I-9 forms, where it used to be just an IRS and INS form.
Yes - sometimes one or two illegal immigrants will slip through, but one business having 15 or 20 out of a work force of 30? I do question the "responsibility" of the employer.
Again, not following through on your homework makes you look bad. Good luck on your next try. . .

It is true that currently employers need only be given the ss# and that most do not question the process in place; that would be counterproductive to the current use of immigrant labor; but it is also true that the people doing it right require federal ID's known as an I-9, pending the immigration process. This allows the immigrant to be duly engaged with employers who must also be accountable the same way a W-2 reports.
Each employer has his own criteria for the employment process; in construction, the developers just want to get it built; everyone turns the other way while they put money in their pocket and contribute to the municipal economy base. We go through the labor department to bring in seasonal workers, that we put through a legalization process if they wish to remain. Once their visas expire, they leave, and because we are on a rotation with the department of labor, we get new people in as needed. They work with I-9's and we are audited by the federal Labor department.
YARS, YEA, YOU ARE SO RIGHT! THAT UGLY MAN HARRASSING PANCHA HAS GOT TO GO!

First no that is not all they have to do an employor has to fill out a form called an I-9, where they make a copy of a 2 ID's
One can be a social security card, and they have to be given a valid social security number.
The employor already signs this form, saying they have verified this information as valid ( and can be fined 10,000 ) for not filling this form out.
This has been in use for years already. so any employor hiring these people are already breaking the law.
Making people follow the law is not discrimination,
Are drug dealers discriminiated against when they are arrested, are theifs discriminated against when they are caught ?
Having to call a number or use a web site to verify if they are valid or not is only a great idea.
In most cases they know if they are legal or not, many don't ask for any id and just pay cash under the table.

Definitely!!!! There may be a few innocent employers, but not that many!!! There IS a way to verify, a persons social security number. I remember them talking about it on the news a couple of months ago, how employers could call or go on-line to check. I don't remember what it was called though. But, you can't HONESTLY believe that places like Tyson chicken, (and those other places) that closed their plants down so the ILLEGALS could march, didn't KNOW the MAJORITY of their employees were ILLEGAL???!!! And, ALSO, what about the place that had 30 ILLEGALS using the SAME social security number!!!!!! Come on now, you can NOT believe they were "innocent"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are a lot of contractors that will hire and pay under the table, so they can save on FICA taxes and workers comp insurance. Because so many employers do this, it draws illegal workers.
There is no perfect solution to the illegal immigrant problem. But common sense says that if you remove whatever is drawing the illegals here, they will not come.
Also, an employer SHOULD want to verify who he hires, illegal or not. You wouldnt want to hire other criminals that will rob your business, would you?

They have to put a real database in place that can be checked by the employer, and have a REAL ID that has biometric information which can be sent (as credit card information is sent) to check against the database. That information would have to match the physical person presenting the card, as well as the data base.
That is how they intend to do it.
It is tough to enforce against employers except where you can show failure to follow process or actual knowledge. This system will be a much more effective process when it is followed than the current one.
I don't see where discrimination comes in though.

It is the responsibility of the employer to check validity of applicant. If they didn't we could all have a great resume. It is simple to verify a SS# with the government. When it isn't done the emplyer has broken the law.
