Well...I try to avoid those people and go to Target. I donate a lot and it is pretty unfortunate that people need to stand outside in the cold and ask for money. But, it is not that I don't want to give money...however I do donate and I do go out often and don't want to feel guilty if I don't want to donate at that period.

No. I give money whenever I can to charities run by my religion, the Catholic Church.

That's not to say that other charities, including the Salvation Army, don't do good work.

But we can't give to every charity, and we have to make tough decisions on which ones we do give to -- but all other things being equal, I'm going to give to those whose religious beliefs are in line with mine. And to those who I know will do good work -- which the Catholic Church definitely does.

I give. I don't know exactly how they use the money, but I give with the intentions of it helping a family (especially children)have a good Christmas. I give what I can. No set amount. And I am likely to give more than once. That doesn't make me special..it just makes me live with myself knowing that maybe I am helping a family have a Christmas.

I stand in the freezing cold every year and ring the bell for them. They feed and clothe a lot of people, they pay gas and electric bills for poor people, they help desperate people with their rent sometimes. They have soup kitchens, some cities have homeless shelters. They host rehab centers for addicts..etc, etc

No - I can't convince myself that it will be the best way to serve the people in need. It might be: I just don't know. I don't want to be dontating just to make myself feel good - instead, I want my donation to have a positive effect.

I used to donate using http://www.helping.org, figuring that I could research how a charity helps people before giving it money.

I usually do, it feels pretty stingy not to drop a buck for the needy when I just spent a hundred bucks on groceries and other items.

No my money goes to my local church! I'm not saying that they do not need it just as bad but this is just how I disperse my money.

Yes, I do often. When I can't give, no one has ever given me a hard time.
