The technological progress of hybrids is nowhere near what it should be, as far along as we are technologically in other areas. For instance, in 1990, you could buy two different gasoline-only cars (the Honda CRX-HF and the Geo Metro) that both got 55 mpg on the highway. But yet, in 2006, there's only one hybrid that gets that good, the 2-door Honda.

Hybrids should be getting roughly twice the mileage they get today. For instance, here's a car that gets 157 mpg, and isn't a hybrid: http://www.treehugger.com/files/2006/02/loremo_ag_157_m.php If it's possible to make a non-hybrid get that kind of gas mileage, don't you think we should expect better mileage out of hybrids? I sure do. If the people who will be selling that car within the next year would have made it a hybrid, it would get at least 250 mpg in town.

But, when you've got Exxon alone making $10.36 BILLION in profits, in only 3 months, you can see how the oil companies spreading around a little bit of their profits would hinder an automobile manufacturer's ability to produce higher mileage cars, huh?

What we all should be demanding from the auto makers is totally electric cars, that have lithium-ion batteries, and are covered in solar cells. Since you can take a heavy 2-door car, like an Escort, and 50 miles in town, and 70 miles on the highway, with old technology deep cycle batteries, you'd be able to go 250-300 miles AT NIGHT (no solar charging) if you were to convert one of those Loremo's to battery power, and used lithium-ion batteries, because it weighs alot less, and has MUCH less wind resistance.
