it depends on how much time you spend working with them and teaching them and what rewards you give them for it.
they won't do it on their own probably. by 4 they should be able to learn it in a couple of months if you work with them every day and reward them.

My 2 yr & 3 mos old daughter can sing the ABC song all the way through (well, when she feels like it - sometimes she only gets to H). She is learning the order of the letters through the song, and at daycare they are teaching her the letters themselves, but I don't think she really has an idea yet of what the letters mean or are used for.

It depends on the child and how much you practice with them. My daughter is almost 15 months and she can hum a little bit of the tune. My step-son (whom does not live with us) is three and he can barely say them at all. His mother does not work with him on them. So, it just depends. The more they hear it, the sooner they will catch on and be able to recite them.

Always talk to your kid, because even if they cannot repeat they are absorbing, and as soon as the kid can talk or even make sounds that resemble words, they can say them, because you teach it he may be able to get some, and just make the sound for others, and thats why you talk to them from conception, its true.
