My daughter is 6 and hearing impared. She is an only child, and involved with dance and soccer. She was previously a daisy girl scout and got to try 4-h for the summer, but fall is soon coming and it will be time to decide which to put her it. What considerations should I give when picking the best one for my daughter?

If it were up to her she would do both of them. We are in a area where for every human there are maybe 2 or 3 cows. She loves the farm part of life, but loves girl scouts too.

I am planning on being her leader if she is going to stay in girl scouts. As for 4-h, I have no experience with it so I would be willing to be a parent helper, but not a leader.

However, I would say that the difference I have seen is that the Girl Scout organization is seriously committed to teaching girls tolerance for differences. Whatever the differences. The best way to assure that your daughter has a possitive experience in either organization, is to be her leader. At least an active involved parent helper for the established leader. You won't regret it.

I was a Girl Scout from the age of 10 to 18. When I got married we moved into a farming community that had a 4-H club. My daughters loved it. The difference between the two is Girl Scouts focuses on family, other cultures, community and outdoor activities. 4-H does all that plus teaches children about farming & taking care of animals. They're both good groups & your daughter will enjoy either one.

4-H is cattle raising and more toward agriculture. The girl scouts is camping and out door activity. Unless you are in farm country the scouts would be best.

4-H is more agriculture based and Girl Scouts is about being a well rounded human being( not just camping). I think Girl Scouts because she will get a broader education, and if she does like animals then it can still be incorporated.

Actually there really isn't much of a difference between the two. Both teach life skills 4H doesn't ONLY teach about livestock and farm living it also teaches participants how to sew, how to make their own designs, how to start up a small business. Which are pretty much the same things Girl Scouts do as well. 4H is more individualized, rather than geared toward a group. The projects you work on in 4H you work on yourself and the aid of your family, in Girl Scouts you work on projects with the group and it's leaders. Girl Scouts also have camp facilities where participants get to share the outdoors with other campers. Do some on line searching of both and you and your daughter sit down together and look them over and decide.

4-H is more than agriculture and farming. There are many projects that range from woodworking to nutrition to veterinary science and many other things! I myself had to make a choice between Girl scouts or 4-H. I choice 4-H and have never regretted it. It was a great experience and taught me skills that most people never learn in a life time. Not only did I learn record keeping, responsibility, and leadership, but I also gained social skills and decision making. I raised sheep rabbits, hogs, chickens, and took many other projects throughout my eight years in 4-H. 4-H also encourages friendships with both females and males. I am currently a senior in college and I am still friends with many of the members of my 4-H club.

Not to say that girl scouts can not teach some of these things. I think girls scouts is a great organization, but I know it can be hard balancing too many activities.

I would talk to your daughter and find out what she enjoys most about girl scouts. Also, see if you can attend a 4-H before you decide to join. If you don't already have a club in mind you can find out through your county extension agent.

Good luck, I hope she has a great experience in which ever activity is chosen! :-)

You can't compare a man to a woman. Each is different. But a man, and a woman, complement each other. In other words, one man and one woman (together) is one unit. They are a complementary pair.
