This Abrams tank was penetrated almost all the way through the tank. Don't believe it? Here look for yourself:

Yes this was in 2003, in Iraq - but what's the follow up? I don't buy that it was a "lucky shot" .........

Wow very interesting answers from a lot of very knowledgeable people. TY. I was just worried that our guys in tanks may have been in trouble. Glad to see it was a lucky shot. I know that all or nearly all shots at Abrams just bounce off- a world of difference from WWII, when Shermans (esp early on) could be shot all the way through the tank by the German 88 at long range.

It really was a lucky shot. I'll let you in on a secret. That hole is in the tank's hull sponson box, basically an onboard tool chest we use to store our heavy-duty tools. The hull sponson box isn't armored, but the main hull behind it is. That is why the crew survived. The armor absorbed enough of the spall to minimize the damage to the inside of the tank and bring the crew home alive. If the RPG-7 (the most common anti-tank weapon employed by the insurgents), really had the capability to punch a hole in an Abrams wherever it hit, there would be no tanks left in Iraq. "Golden shots" are very infrequent, and near impossible to achieve except by chance.

Russian-made RPG-29. It's the latest and greatest export version of the RPG series AT rocket launchers. The last photo with the multiple holes shows where the plasma jet broke up after impacting the different parts of the interior. This was not a DU dart, folks. The Insurgents don't have any tanks to fire those out of. It is worth noting that the crew survived the incident, and that tank looks like it can be returned to service.

The 2003 Rockcastle County Fair "Corn Nut" spitting champion, Enos W. Hicks is responsible. Strong winds gusted through Mt. Vernon KY that fateful August day, propelling his Corn Nut a record-breaking 6562 miles and causing much concern among the military. An HBO movie deal is still being negotiated. I'll keep you posted.

Weakest part of armor pierced by unknown projectile once 3 yrs ago.
If this was a "new" weapon, more than 1 tank would have gone down by now.
I think it was a David/Goliath type of fluke, a one in a million shot in the weakest point.

It was a lucky hit from an RPG.
And the reason you have not heard any details is that we are not in the habit of telling people where to shoot our tanks.

People who will be attacking us dont have that kind of capability. The Abrams isnt invincible but its damn close. beside that was probably an M1A1, we now use the M1A2,............... actually, now that I read the article, it seriously looks like the work of aliens or god

It looks like it was hit by a Armour piercing round made of depleted uranium. This is not an enemy round it is a U.S. round. I believe they are sabot rounds. So called friendly fire, the tank was shot by one of it's own. apg can not penetrate tank Armour.
