starflames yep christianity will never be perfect.
Do not believe something simply because you have heard it. Do not believe anything simply because it has been handed down for many generations. Do not believe anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe anything simply because it is written in Holy Scriptures. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of teachers, elders, or wise men. Believe only after careful observation and analysis, when you find that it agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all. Then accept it, and live up to it.
~The Buddha~
because everyone is different and some religions embrace induviduality and others shun it.

Each of these Buddhist schools where nourished by a specific culture. The original seed is the same for all.
I think if you will look at Europe and America in about 200 years you will recognize some other schools, developed in western culture.
Nowadays you have the big advantage of choosing a Buddhist school which fits best to your personal situation. And even to change it when your situation has changed.

How many are there? I thought there were only three, Theravada, Mahayana, and Vijryana (Tibetan/Zen). But basically it's because different groups and different philosophies formed over the course of the many years.

There is only two kind of Buddhisms. But it differes according to countries though. Lord Buddha was born in India ( Nepal) But only Sri Lanka, Japan, China, Nepal, Thailand, and other south Asian countries have Buddhism. But they have the same "Suthra" and they learn and teach the same Buddhism though it sounds according to their language. The main language in Buddhism, the "Suthra and Gunthra have been written in "Sanskrit" .
There is two type of Buddhisms One is "Theravadha" which is in Sri Lanka and the other one is "Mahayana" which is in China, Japan.
I hope you got your answer.
