Start with what you are wearing: You may be required to take off your shoes so clean sox with no holes are a must. Keep your metal to a minimum . Be prepared to remove your watch , belt [ so make sure your pants will stay up w/o one] , glasses, any change you may have place them all in one of those nice plastic baskets. As a rule internal body metal won't set off metal detectors. You can not go thru security with a cup of Starbucks in your hand or any other open drink.. You will be required to show ID at least twice so make sure you take the time to put it away properly or wear a shirt with one or two breast pockets-great for holding boarding passes .
Enjoy your flight

as someone said go to www.tsa.gov, there is a list of prohibited items, people nail files, clippers, razors for shaving, scissors under the four inch mark are allowed, what ever airports you all are at are illegally taking your stuff, I can only vouch for airports with the TSA security, I heard some airports aren't TSA and are private security so those will be different, shouldn't be though, but if your still getting nail clippers taken somethings wrong.

ok here we go. first usally it is only one to two checked bags which are the ones they take and put in the bottem of the planes and then one carry on bag which is like a small suit case then one personal bag like a purse or a book bag. most airlines will charge you for extra bagage or any over sixty or so pounds then in your checked bags my dad puts his pocket knife in there but you know nothing that could like bring attention to your bag you should be fine there are restrictions on how much alcohal you can carey or check in but it really al depends on wht areline you are flying on the best thing to do is call the airline and ask your questions those things are based on Delta Airlines because i live in atlanta. so really just call the airlines and they have people working all night long most likly so call them whenever hope this helps

For your carry on luggage don't bring any nail scissors or razors, because they will take them away from you, it's happened to my little sister, however you can put them in your regular luggage. And make sure you get a seat next to the window. Take-offs and landings are awesome.
