What does the word "Date" mean to you?

I am a young man, and have been told I'm attractive. I've wondered at times though, because often when I ask girls out they turn me down, usually when I say the word "Date."

To me "a Date" is any time a guy and a girl are hanging out (or going out) to get to know one another better, no strings attatched.

All I can think of is that we, in the English-Speaking world, have forsaken other words that used to imply differant phases of male-female relationships.

Is there some stigma around this word that I'm not aware of?

Major stigma!

My steady boyfriend and I really got into it because I introduced him to a guy that I had "dated." To me, this meant I had casually gone out with the guy a couple of times, no big deal. To my boyfriend, it meant we had slept together, and how dare I rub it in his face! Who knew?

My advice: be specific. Rather than asking a girl out on a "date," invite her for coffee, lunch or maybe a drink. Then she knows what she's getting into.
